Watch in a few weeks time. One day, the outer covering of the bud will flake off. Late in the day, occasionally the next day, an inner covering will come off to reveal a "basket" with floataway seeds inside. Catch them quick or they'll just blow away.

I have photos somewhere, I think. Here we go. Its Avonia quiaria ssp alstonii, but more or less the same. The outer covering is ready to come off

The outer covering reveals an inner covering like a hat over the top of the basket.

When the outer covering comes off, you can see the seeds just sitting in the basket. The basket will close up if it gets wet.

Shake out the seeds. The will germinate immediately, starting about 24 hours after you wet them. You can actually see germination start after only a few hours if you look closely.

Many Anacampseros species, basically the larger-leafed forms, have an extended hilum covering the seed. This is designed for wind dispersal and makes the seed look like a little pale grey triangle. Some of the smaller Anacampseros species don't have this and neither do Avonias.

Yes, about so, but I must admit I never put them under a magnifying glass. I do know :( that one liitle sneeze blows everything everywhere.
