Cactus weight loss

Hi everyone, I saw cactus patches on sale in a health shop! You stick them on just like a nicotine patch and apparantly you lose weight.

Sounds pretty crackpot to me, anyone else seen these? Surely the logical way to lose weight would be to have a cactus diet, I reckon the spines would make you think twice about that snack attack..... :)

Good point Dustin - I've got plenty of SPAM e-mails selling Hoodia gordonii as "cactus".

ROFL@Bill!! :D

You might be onto something there, the hippie types who go to these stores will go for biodegradable cactus patches rather than the plastic ones. I imagine cheaper to produce too . . . :P

Anywhere you stick them will soon become a problem area if you don't have one already

I know this an old posting but the humour aside there are cactus that have been used for centuries in parts of india and east africa. They are known to stave off starvation pangs and release energy from the muscles during periods of nutrient depletion like during famine or on long hunting trips.
One of these is caraluma fimbriata which is still used across India as a vegetable addition to meat stews cuƕies etc. It has a slight sour bitter taste to add flavour to the dish.
There is some scientific research that indicate it does work as an appetite suppressant. Given the anecdotal evidence of decades of herbalist experience and modern research it's something I dont think should be laughed off.
There is some truth in it.

I am going to get hold of some carraluma fimbriata and try growing it in a pot
