Well everyone, I've got to announce the largest picture update since the start of the Big Picture Project.

Since the last update on 4/21/2009 (mostly within the past 2 days) an additional 402 photos have been added! This includes 39 new species (or new ssp, var., etc.).

That means the site now has a total of 1117 taxa represented with 3909 images.

While many contributed to this last update, I have to credit Jeurgen Menzel specifically as he literally bombarded me with images. Take a look here at these marvelous pics of both cultivated and habitat plants:

Thanks again everyone! I've already got more images that need to be added.

Yes Tony, that is one hard genus to track down! It is amazing to me that after all this time and looking at the long list of contributors to the guide that there are still about a half dozen genera that have no images at all.

OK, I thought I'd announce the progress of the picture updates over the last few weeks. There are still many more to go, but since the last update from August 7 here are the stats:

Total number of photos added = 564

New species this update (including new ssp, var, etc.) = 141

As of now, there are 1258 taxa represented with 4473 images.

There are now all but two genera represented with images. The two that still have not one pic are Leocereus and Pseudoacanthocereus.

So many new images, be sure and take the time to cruise through the site. Many of the added images are from habitat or flower shots where previously there was only single cultivated plant picture.

Many forum members have contributed images, but I've also had many come in from e-mail. I have been putting up the e-mailed images first only because you guys haven't seen them yet whereas most pics from members here, you have seen.

Thanks again to all contributors - even if I haven't got all your images up yet.

OK, well I plan on getting more done today... stay tuned!

wow, I somehow missed the post about the massive upload of photos from Juergen menzel. Highlights there for me include the Brachycereus flower (wild!), the Cintia root pic, the Echinocactus parryi flowers, and of course the awesome Peniocereus pictures. Much more too! What a huge windfall for the forum!

I haven't checked out your new update yet. But thanks for constantly improving this resource Daiv.

Update again - pictures continue being added to the site from the many generous contributors. I even found some of my own that I hadn't posted yet.

Anyway, here are the numbers as of 12/19/09

Total number of photos added = 210

New species this update (including new ssp, var, etc.) = 6

As of now, there are 1264 taxa represented with 4683 images.

Not many new species as you can see, but many flower, fruit, seed, or habitat images for plants with just a stem picture. If you do the math, there are nearly 4 images per species. It isn't even like that, but gives an idea.

More on the way!

Total photos added since last update: 323

New Species: 11

There are now 1275 species listed along with 451 subspecies/varieties/forms.

Here is the big news, total number of images: 5006

We broke the 5000 mark! That's a lot of cactus pictures and there are many more yet to post!

Oh, and meant to post some stats from last year. On January 7, 2009 there were 1046 species and 3028 pictures.

And around that same time in 2008 there were 879 species and 2350 images.

I'm very excited to see the growth, but there is a long way to go. There are about 1 1/2 times more species without even one picture than all the species that have been added in the last two years!

The trouble is that the more species that get filled in, the harder the rest of them are to find.

Thanks to all the generous contributors, the number of images continues to grow fast!

Here is a quick update:

As of 1/24/2010:

Total Photos added since last update: 457

New Species: 7

There are now 1282 species listed along with 473 subspecies/varieties/forms.

Total number of images: 5463

I've got so many pictures waiting in the wings, we'll be hitting 6000 with ease.

Many species are filling out nicely showing variations from cultivation to habitat, various levels of maturity are represented, flowers, fruits, etc...

Time for another update...

Total Photos added since last update: 540

New Species: 8

There are now 1290 species listed along with 516 subspecies/varieties/forms.

Total number of images: 6003

It is quite likely that the number will exceede 10,000 by years end.
