During summer, my plant sits on the balcony. It gets RAIN, that is enough -- I never even thought of brushing or cleaning.

I think I'm going to keep brushing one and grooming it to look proper and leave one completely alone and let it get messy to compare them in a couple of years.

How long does it take for the cephalium to appear? I've had mine for a few years but it doesn't look like doing anything soon.

Ok, but I did get it ID'd on here, although it wasn't 100 per cent. If not that does anyone have any ideas please?

To me the spines don't resemble mantanzanus( I may be wrong). I can't tell when will your cactus produce a cephalium. I have a melocactus mantanzanus. I brought it as a seedlings around 6 years ago. Due to improper care it hasn't grown a lot. Its about the of a tennis ball.

G'morning gillinger,
I think your cactus is a Melocactus but it is not a matanzanus.
It is not easy to tell the name of young Melocactus but it may be a young azureus.
Shape and length of spins seems to tell "azureus".
Can you tell me the size of your Melocactus?
Frank

For you Melocactus fans out there, reliable sources indicate Melo matanzanus starts growing a cephalium at 5 years. Could be wrong, but I believe that makes it the fastest cephalium-grower in the genus.
