No good Lophophora books?

Post by EliWhitney3140 »

The longer I have been in this hobby the more I have come to appreciate specific cacti. I imagine at one time or another we all stumble onto Lophophora. It is an absolutely beautiful plant with a rich, and sometimes complicated history, and to me personally a very interesting cactus from a botanical perspective. So I am very curious why there doesn't seem to be any books about Lophophora from a botanical or scientific point of view. All the books I have found are about Peyote and how to consume it, which is not what I am interested in learning personally. Is there a good book on Lophophora that I have just missed? It would be great to find one about the different species, data on those species, a real deep dive from a botanical/ scientific point of view.

There is a Kaktusy Lophophora Special issue (http://lophophora.blogspot.com/2006/03/ ... ial-2.html). Don't know it myself, but I am sure it is something you might be on the lookout for content wise. It is more a booklet than a book, though. But then again, there are really not that many species of Lophophora around to fill a big book with. I suspect Lophophora alberto-vojtechii might not be mentioned in it, as it might be too recently discovered / named to be in the booklet.

I suspect you can get it in English and in Czechish.

I did a Google search"Lophophora books". About 190,000 hits of published books.

Thank you Aiko and 7george for those links. Aiko I have heard of the Kaktusy Lophophora special issue, but I have not been able to find it anywhere.

7George, that link you sent is great, thanks again.

Not sure if you have to be a member of Kaktusy to obtain it? I wanted a copy of theirs on Eriosyce so one of their members obtained it for me from somebody he knew who did not want it. Depends if you can find a Kaktusy member who can obtain it? Occasionally they do appear in booksellers second-hand and also on EBAY.

Some of the "cactus chewers" sites do have valuable information on the plants rather than just the alkaloids. Trout's Notes contains a lot of useful information.

Also A lot of information online. See:-

Www.keithsplantbooks.co.uk is a good source for books, I bought several books from Keith. It does not have this Kaktusy special at the moment, but you can always ask Keith to see if he can be on the lookout for you, I suspect.

There is also the book 'Ariocarpus et cetera - The special smaller genera of Mexican Cacti' by Pilbeam & Weightman. Which is very nice (I have it). But Lophophora is just a section of the book.

If you are in the USA Daiv runs a similar specialist bookshop to Keith.

He lists some Kaktusy specials but I can't see the Lophophora one but as Aiko says you can always ask the booksellers to keep an eye out for a new or second-hand copy for you.
