Who has the oldest cactus?

Post by Cactus76 »

Hi everyone I'm new to CG, I've never really worried about what kind of cactus i have. Yet in the last few years people that i have given cuttings to have asked. At 9 i was given a bunch of starters from a couple that made decorative cactus pots. Some died most giveaway but my baby that is now 44 and as strong as ever I've found out is a Cereus jamacaru. I was interested if anyone else has any old cactus. Here in oklahoma it loves the summers but i have to bring it in for winter.

Thank you for taking care of it for so long.

I have a singular (no offsets) Echinopsis subdenudata from the 1970s but I have not had it that entire time.

Great specimen, Cactus76! As a very young boy I saw first time cacti seeds in 1980 and happy to say that 3 plants are still alive and flourish: Gymnocalycium saglionis, G. spegazzinii and Astrophytum myriostigma.

That's awesome anttispp.. When i received my Cereus jamacaru i also received a seedling of Gymnocalycium saglionis and a Astrophytum myriostigma. My Gs i called my fish hook cactus, it got about the size of a large grapefruit. My AsM was about a foot tall before having to give them away. Would really like to see some pictures of them.

I have an organ pipe cactus that came as part of a starter kit cactus garden from the gift shop at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum in 1996. So it's 24 years old. From 2 inches to 2 feet.

Awesome stories! I don't have any more than 12 years old. Or at least I haven't owned any for more than 12 years. I've got a 10 foot Seguaro in my yard but I have no idea on the age.

I’ve got a Ferocactus wislizoni that’s about 20.

Started some P. Pringlei and Saguaro from seed in 2018.. so the long wait continues. They’ve been slow growing here, the Saguaro would be luck to be 1/2” and the Pringlei’s are about 1-1 1/4” (tall).

I have nothing that grand, but I have an Echinopsis oxygona that's around 40 years old. I didn't note the date when I bought it, it was just something a local nursery had stuck in a pot with some succulents that I actually wanted. It does nothing but produce offsets, never flowers, and survived a near-death experience from root mealybugs. You can read its saga here:

Somewhere on a harddrive I've got a photo from Uppsala Botanical gardens in Sweden of a Cereus something, clearly a cutting but going by the tag it was cataloged by Carl Linnaeus. And knowing he passed in 1778 it could potentially be among the oldest known plants still in cultivation.

Kak tus, i agree. to see everyone's photos of their old cactus would be great. Along with how they came to acquire them.
