Rotted Kalanchoe

Post by Maxy24 »

I was given a Kalanchoe, I don't know the species, it looks like this:

Anyway I had no idea it was a succulent, didn't even think to make sure, it didn't look like my idea of a succulent. As a result I didn't think to change its potting mix or be careful with watering. Today I noticed it was flopping over a bit and then I saw a black spot on its stem by the soil line. I squeezed it and sure enough the stem was rotten. The green flesh is rotted but there appears to be a more woody stem inside of the flesh that is still firm. Most of the plant appears fine, the rot has not spread up too far but it did go all the way around the stem. How should I handle this to try and save it? Should I cut everything off just above the rot or should I remove just the rotten flesh from around the woody stem and leave the woody stem intact? Or is there no way to save it? If the main plant is a goner could cuttings be taken to make a new plant from?

I really don't seem to be having much luck with these cacti and succulents :(
