My label says southern Texas. Although that's quite a large area!

that is quite a cute little plant. :) I was thinking that it might be O. macrohiza when I first saw it.

And Tony, I think you sent me one of the segments of that one as well as a different one. I will take pics tomorrow if I remember :)

Peter, when I sent you this one, I had it tagged with the name Opuntia macrocentra. Sometimes all these names and name changes get a little frustrating. Here is a picture of that very same plant growing in a more stressed condition. Tony

yeah ok, I have one of that for sure, I have a purplish colored one, and I have one that looks like the bottom segments of the other one. So maybe you sent me two pads from teh same plant. lol
(or maybe I got it from somewhere else, which is possible too hahaha)

Image

Image the plants.. First one I have IDed as O. macrohiza and assume is the plant above. (the stressed one)

Imagehad this one IDed as O. macrocentra, but I think it's the first plant at the top.. Could be wrong tho. :)

The plant from south Texas could be the diploid form of O.macrorhiza which is actually a different species. We will get all of these names sorted out eventually.
the diploid population has been included within the tetraploids as O. macrorhiza as it has only been recognized as a diploid population fairly recently. You need flowers and fruit, as well as chromosome counts to keep O. macrocentra, O. azurea, and O. macrorhiza sorted out in Texas. I don't know how the name "fusca-atra" got applied here.

Dean, me either, but they plants I have vaguely looked like O. macrocentra so I can understand the confusion. I think both of those pads are O. macrohiza tho.. But then again I have been wrong before and I will be wrong in the future at some point I am sure :)
