Re: scapharostrus, scaphirostris or scaphirostrus?

Thanks, Dave. I did not know the meaning of the species name. Now I cannot see this plant without imagining it as a bunch of boats sinking with their bows up in the air!

Re: MrXeric's flowers and things

Epithelantha chihuahuensis. I cross pollinated several flowers from each plant, but only one plant produced a fruit (with only 2 seeds!) https://imgur.com/K1Wenoa.jpg This one produced fruit much more readily, Cochemiea schumannii 'globosa' (grafted on S. megalanthus). https://imgur.com/zKTro...

Nice :D
The other seedlings from the same batch I sent you haven't flowered for me yet, though one does have buds.
But the parents have flowered:

Awesome collection, Lolavy! Interesting to see the fabric pots. I would think they would stay wet for too long? But that probably won't be an issue in our climate. :) Greetings to your furry friend with the curious nose and whiskers!

Re: A. caput-medusae X A. miriostigma?

Those look like Astrophytum myriostigma 'Kikko' (=Kitsukou?) to me. I crossed A. caput-medusae with myriostigma twice last year, all seeds failed to germinate. I did it again this year, but this time one seed germinated. It's about two months old now, but has yet to grow its first tubercle. I did ot...

Re: Info on this cactus Chamaecereus luisramirezii

ADBLPS had seed of this species (with locality) for the 2022-23 catalog. Very attractive when in bloom. I was debating whether or not to buy seed, but ended up getting something else!

Pic from the catalog.

Re: Updated seed lists

I'd like to know who at CITES decides what is on Appendix I. Aztekium ritteri is on the list but the other 2 much more rare species aren't. There are many Sclerocactus on the list, but the one I've been trying to buy for years ( Sclerocactus polyancistrus ) is not. The relatively common Coryphantha...

Re: Updated seed lists

Nope - it's an "OR" clause for whichever is exceeded last; so, cycads would exceed the weight limit, so max of 50 seeds; Blossfeldia would exceed the count limit, so numbers could be in the thousands before reaching the weight limit. I've confirmed with the USDA and have had many shipment...

Re: Updated seed lists

To be clear, if you have a USDA Small Lots of Seeds (SLOS) permit, you do NOT need a phytosanitary permit. Also, the limit is indeed 50 packets of seed per shipment, but for each packet, the limit is 50 seeds per packet *OR* a packet weighing less than 10 grams. So, for cacti seeds in particular, t...

Re: Updated seed lists

But then again, besides maybe the Discocactus, you can order the others easily at Mesa Garden. For some of those, like the Pediocactus and Sclerocactus, I can't order. Yes, Mesa Garden has them available, but they've been increasing their prices lately. Makes one want to shop around before buying!

Re: Updated seed lists

Some of the seeds from the Czech growers are really tickling my fancy! I've never bought seeds from oversees sources before. Does anyone know if you need a phyto certificate to import seeds to USA/California? It's not totally clear to me from googling, since most of the info I could find relates to...

Man, I'm taking your thread way off topic-but you kind of set the example! It's alright Jerry, I am learning a lot! I looked up D. spatulata and according to wikipedia they do not develop hibernacula. Reading more on hibernacula, they are an adaptation to survive the winter. D. spatulata grow...

Re: Grafting tips and care

The basics of grafting are the same, regardless of what rootstock you use. So this means clean tools, even between cuts, maximizing contact between the vascular bundles of scion and rootstock (be sure both are healthy and in full growth), somehow holding the scion down on the rootstock while it bond...
