Re: 8 years ago...

They are very frost tender. I lost my first batch years ago to cold. The Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix now has a LOT of them in the ground.

Re: Guessing at age

I have a few in my yard more than 2 feet across. I've seen them larger. They are a common landscape plant in the Phoenix, AZ area. So, if you give them good treatment they can bet quite large.

Re: 8 years ago...

Welcome back! Tony isn't on here, but he is on Facebook and Instagram. I also got a piece of that S. gigantea from him; quite a plant! When I show it to visitors they ask why I would even have something like that. I dunno, it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Re: Who has the oldest cactus?

Awesome stories! I don't have any more than 12 years old. Or at least I haven't owned any for more than 12 years. I've got a 10 foot Seguaro in my yard but I have no idea on the age.

Re: can to be a mammillaria?

It looks like it's just started mature spines. A feature to note is the tubercles are flattened and point vertically, rather than perpendicular to the body.

Re: mammillaria variety?

Not a typical M. magnimamma, but very nice. I recommend reporting. I think the offsets will grow I'd there is more room.

Great plants. I really like the before and after comparison. We have a lot of the same plants! I got rid of my Cumarinias when I did the Great Purge. It was very grabby with those spines!

Re: Mammillaria ID

Woodsii does have dark/black spines. That looks like classic M. parkinsonii to me. M. chionocephala has a much woolier crown. IMHO.

For that kind of fruit I wait until it comes away with a gentle wiggle.

Re: witch Opundia ficus indica?

In my limited experience (I've had one in my yard for 18 months), O. ficus indica doesnt have spines and is much larger than the pictured plant. The fruit on my plant was about the size of a lemon.

Don't have an I'd, but I'm pretty sure it's not O. ficus indica.
