Re: Astrophytum asterias indoors?

Thank you Aiko and One Windowsill :) Since I have nil experience with sowing cacti, buying seeds seems a bit ambitious for me. I may giving it a try later this year but with some easier species perhaps?

A.myriostigma is available for me , maybe I should give it a try before thinking of A.asterias.

Do you use raw honey and not the ‘regular’ ones which are processed?
I use a processed honey.
don’t it interfer with the plants photosynthesis?
Yes it dose theoretically but there are no special issues for the growing of asterias.

Astrophytum asterias indoors?

One of the cacti on my wishlist is Astrophytum asterias and some of the super kabutos. I have never seen one IRL though and don’t know how easy it would be for me to getting my hands on the species either. But ..reading about the species it is described as difficult to keep ( on its own roots) and I...

Re: Why aren’t epiphytic cacti more popular?

Forest cacti are usually big or huge. Desert cacti very often small and compact. If I could live somewhere in Queensland on own farm I'd collect whole botanic garden... Oh..me too! :D Seeing all these blogs with hundreds of blooming cacti I sometimes wonder why I even bother keeping cacti.. :P Apar...

Re: Hana's cacti

Hanazono; Wonderful pictures and cacti! I have two questions for you if you don’t mind :) First; you mentioned using honey for rooting. Do you use raw honey and not the ‘regular’ ones which are processed? The very heavy flecking on some of the A. super kabutos , don’t it interfer with the plants pho...

Why aren’t epiphytic cacti more popular?

Reading a lot on different fora and sites, it seems to me that epiphytic cacti aren’t that popular as compared to desert cacti? I may be wrong, maybe the epiphytic cacti people keep to themselves on epi fora and don’t mix as much with the ‘other’ cacti people? If my assumption is correct ( epi cacti...

Thank you Aiko :) I have to read more about the Parodia’s then :)

These small cacti I think I have identified myself ( or rather hope so..)

Mammillaria polythele ‘Toluca’ , Notocactus leninghausii and Echinocactus grusonii ?

Cacti in cultivation- are they really what we think they are?

Reading a thread ( unfortunately I can’t remember which and who said it ) that crossbreeding/crosspollinating) isn’t that uncommon in a greenhouse where several species are kept and blooming at the same time. Seed collected from these cacti could in other words be mongrels. So.. whit that in mind, h...

Two Mammilaria and..?

I bought these small cacti and some others a while ago and have tried to figure out what species they are ( or the genus would be a big help) . The two first ones looks pretty much the same to me apart from the fact that the hairs on number one ( the one to the left) are much longer than the other o...

Re: Mrs.Green windowsills-growing cacti against the odds

Flowers... My Rhipsalis cassutha has a flower and more to come. :) Not much to ‘brag’ about for the majority of you I would guess but for me cacti flowers aren’t something I take for granted, it’s more like a bonus :) Not a great picture either but the plnt is entangled in other plants and not easy...
