Re: #4 winter hibernation question.

As far as sip vs soak it depends on your soil and your conditions... I soaked my cacti BUT they are in 100% mineral soil and dry completely in 2 weeks if it was cold and shady. You can also NOT water the entire time and they will survive. Careful with watering if not enough light as it will cause is...

Re: #4 winter hibernation question.

With temps over 60F during the day they will not go dormant. I have zero experience with grow lights but if there is enough strength they will grow as normal conditions but you should water less often since not as warm and DO NOT FERTILIZE or they will have weak growth.

Re: Names for Seedlings

Do the ones with a 'ring' around rather then the 2 lines also have a good chance of being super kabuto? these are 6-7 months old.. not gonna thin out but would repot separately.

Re: Names for Seedlings

How would you call seedlings of a Astrophytum asterias Hanazono without the Hanazono Areoles?? Or an Astrophytum asterias cv. Super Kabuto seedling that looks like a natural form of Astrophytum asterias? it would be just astrophytum asterias or you could add hybrid/mix to the end... you wouldn't add...

Re: Opuntia Microdasys v.Albispina failure?

Has anyone tried carefully chipping the seeds? I've never grown opuntia from seed so IDK if it would help.

Re: Names for Seedlings

G'morning Holunder, 2. I have sown some Astrophytum seeds last winter. Some of them will have their parents specific cultivar attributes others not. How would you call seedlings of a Astrophytum asterias Hanazono without the Hanazono Areoles?? Or an Astrophytum asterias cv. Super Kabuto seedling th...

Re: Maryland Grow Tent Winter Blackout?

I'm not telling you to do this but my cacti handle a few nights of 1-2C so 35F and I watered them before hand. IF you were to use a heater you could save money setting the heater even lower to upper 30 or low 40s. Even my lithops did fine that I started a few months ago thinking they were winter gro...

Re: AM/PM watering

DaveW answered similar to how I see it… some people like to water at night since cacti are CAM plants they think best to water them but roots will drink and grow in contact with water regardless of time of day. In deserts rains don’t happen exclusively at night and happen during sunny days like Dave...

Re: Is Koehres open?

Fresh lophophora have very high germination rate koehres seeds are the issue. The thing is they do offer relatively cheap seeds and sometimes in large volumes. From my understanding they don't grow all the seeds they offer so can't have maximum control over quality... that said I still use them onc...

Re: MrXeric's seedlings 2022

looking nice... all your cacti are growing slowly but they are much hardier.

Looking at your pictures I'm glad I sowed very heavily Turbinicarpus rather than using 2 planters used only 1... they should be fine for a year or longer.

Re: seedlings for grafting

It depends on your vision and finger dexterity... over 5 years ago I was able to graft 1 month old aztekium and few days old lophophora. Some seedlings already sprout large so you can even graft a day or two after sprouting. NOW I feel clumsy attempting to mircograft and opt to not graft or wait a f...

Well if you don't water it yea... I have watered mine when day temps reach that but cold spells only last 2 weeks or so and 100% mineral mix and outside in full sun so... your experience may vary

Re: Winter preparations Question?

They can survive with zero light all winter if temps are low enough and no water there will be zero etiloation based on others experiences... On another forum a grower lived near the Arctic circle and was able to grow in the extremes of zero sunlight for months at a time he did supplement a little b...
