Re: Rentokil crawling bug powder as a systemic?
Permethrin is not systemic and the insect would have eat it or come into contact with it. Also dangerous for bees and cats.

Re: Which day time and night time temperatures are best suited for cacti.
Some Frailea are from Brazil and Colombia. Melocactus are pretty much entirely tropical. Unless you are going to set up a controlled environment chamber with reduced humidity and temperature or move to the Highlands you do need to concentrate on those tropical species. Even many of the Mexican and C...

Re: Hot bath against root mealybugs
"insecticidal soap"...?! interesting, never heard about that. N. Soap has been used for at least 190 years to kill plant pests. Probably a lot longer. https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=uc1.c047772589&view=1up&seq=522 You can use almost any type of relatively pure soap or dete...

Re: Post your houseplants here
This small plant have doubled it’s size since I got it and I wonder if it could be a Strelitzia, possible reginae? It looks like a Strelitzia , not sure what varieties they have in the shops now. I think the seeds are almost as interesting as the flowers. http://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:...

Re: cfl question
It's been a few years since I've sown any seeds but i had a little cheap reliable set up. Years ago when I started in the hobby it was recommended to me to use a 6500k cfl bulb like this https://www.amazon.com/Sylvania-26352-Light-Bulb-6500K-Daylight/dp/B07J4T5XG1/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=6...

Re: who uses cinnamon
Just to make it quite clear, cinnamaldehyde is the thing that gives cinnamon its cinnamonness. It is the essence of the cinnamony goodness of cinnamon. Cinnamon is a highly-desired spice purely because of the scent and flavour given to it by cinnamaldehyde. The quality of cinnamon is assessed by its...

Re: who uses cinnamon
The reason I describe the research as preliminary is because while there are some studies demonstrating the efficacy of cinnamon extracts against certain fungi in certain crops (see a recent systematic review: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/labs/pmc/articles/PMC4174793/) That 2013 review that you lin...

Re: who uses cinnamon
One Windowsill, This is a cacti forum so I would assume that generally, we do not eat decorative houseplants. Cinnamaldehyde is very different from store-bought cinnamon, and unless one is somehow going to extract it from powdered cinnamon my argument stands: cinnamon is inconsistent and inferior t...

Re: who uses cinnamon
I am not sure I understand why people use cinnamon when there are proper fungicides available. Literature on its antifungal properties in plants is very preliminary, not to mention that efficacy is most likely inconsistent and dependent on brand, type, quality, etc. H I am going to be eating many o...

Re: who uses cinnamon
I recently used a piece of toilet roll with a couple of drops of cinnamon oil on next to a fan when a young stapeliad seedling developed black spots of fungus. I have repeated this every few days. It seems to have stopped the infection entirely though it still has scars. They are in a light chamber...
