I like that Italian coin...very much in keeping with the monumental Fascist design aesthetic of the time. I found a few more Irish coins, pre-/post-decimalization. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii249/spoon99/money/scan0007moreirishcoins.jpg Some banknotes are a little weird...50 francs from Fra...

I can certainly understand why having a land line and phone that doesn't need electricity can be comforting. But I also asked myself, "Have you ever been in an 'emergency,' 'disaster' or other situation where having immediate access to a phone would have made any difference to anything?" ...

There are certainly differences between cats and dogs, and dogs are probably in the long run more friendly, but I'm a cat person all the way. Cats have earned an undeserved reputation as being aloof and solitary, when in reality many of them are extremely friendly and need constant love from their ...

Sorry, I was kind of a grump last night, and maybe just a little bit unkind :) frangipani, they were commemoratives, but with normal circulation. Accrding to Wikipedia "The program was conceived as a means of creating a new generation of coin collectors, and in that it succeeded. The 50 State Q...

But still, in disasters, when all the cell towers are either blown down or so busy you cannot get dial tone, that POTS phone is a nice thing to have "just in case". We keep our landline partly for emergencies.... I can certainly understand why having a land line and phone that doesn't nee...

U.S. Quarters - The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

I applaud the U.S. Mint for loosening their rules a bit and starting this program. Unfortunately, most of the designs were pretty bad. Saving the (few) good for the last, here are the (mostly) bad & ugly/tacky/horrendous: My home state of Wisconsin was dishonest...where is the big frothy mug of ...

Peter, apologies for hijacking your thread a bit. I always keep a few coins (and banknotes, if they're nice) from my travels...mostly pre-euro era. Irish coins are beautiful for their simplicity, pictures of animals that almost look primitive: http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii249/spoon99/money/s...

Thx guys for the advice. I have to keep my sunroom at a minimum of 55 degrees for my euphorbias, so the cactus seedlings will stay where they are, where they can get some sun.

Thx,

The battery never runs down. John That doesn't really have anything to do with land line vs. cell phones. The handsets on land line phones also rely on batteries. Some of us consider the cell phone an "electronic leash". I have been known to let the phone ring if I am not in the mood to t...

Do you grow your grandma's succulents?

I've picked up a few plants that my grandma used to grow, out of nostalgia and as kind of a tribute. So far, Ceropegia woodii, Ledebouria socialis, and now Cissus quadrangularis. These old-fashioned plants are invariably of easy growth, and always have colorful names, like String of Hearts, Leopard ...

We are here to PLUMP you up (Lithops)

Apologies for the outdated SNL almost-quote :) I haven't watered my little pot of beginner lithops since spring, but gave them one drink about a month ago, and another about a week ago. Now most of them are growing about an inch above the soil, and some show signs of overwatering. I'm surprised beca...
