Re: Cactus ID: 7 years seed grown
E. magnificus must be much rarer in Finland then since Uebelmannia's are far less common in the UK and fetch far higher prices. E. magnificus when first imported to Britain, being propagated in sunnier countries, used to have a beautiful bluish waxy epidermis, but that does not develop much in our s...

Re: Info on this cactus Chamaecereus luisramirezii
As shown above it is usually grown as a pendant plant in a hanging basket, unlike the usual C. silvestrii that grows OK in a pot on the stageing. As to its discovery see the following link that will usually translate using Google Translator or similar. http://www.incact.cz/index.php/82-chamaecereus-...

Yes Tony Santore, well known on YouTube from his "colourful" language sprinkled with F-words, but he knows his botany.

Re: Epis with reddish newgrowth
My Schlumbergera stems are totally red when new and small but turn green a few weeks later as they grow. Epiphytes are usually lower light plants that grow in the dappled shade of other vegetation in habitat and seldom fully out in the open. See:- https://gardenforindoor.com/cactus-turning-red/#:~:t...

Re: Epis with reddish newgrowth
Yes my Schlumbergera gaertneri also does it with new segments. Its all down to light intensity and as the segment ages it turns green. Maybe the equivalent of humans tanning to protect against too much UV light for young shoots. As long as the shoots are not damaged and turn green later nothing to w...

Re: Cacti in Panama Garden 1500 meters
Hard to tell from a top shot how tall and proportionately globular they are? If thicker bodied than the other Eriocactus and usually more globular it could be Parodia (Notocactus, Eriocactus,) schumanniana? http://www.llifle.com/Encyclopedia/CACTI/Family/Cactaceae/1145/Notocactus_schumannianus https...

Re: A Blooming Thread
Hi Spence, Setiechinopsis tend to be short lived plants, over 5 years is a good age. However they are self fertile therefore plant a few seeds from those fruits to have replacements coming along. I bring mine indoors when in bud so as to not miss the flowers, otherwise when you go into the greenhous...

Re: Best variety/ss of Ariocarpus Kotschoubeyanus?
There are as many forms of any species as you want to distinguish since no two plants are identical if not clones. Therefore it is a personal opinion as to what degree of variation in that species deserves a subspecific designation. The usual forms accepted for A. kotschoubeyanus are kotschoubeyanus...

The change from the past is DNA Sequencing which is supposed to give more accurate indications of relationships. Meaning which plants come from the same lines of ev0lution known as a monophyletic classification. In the past plants were largely classified on their morphology, meaning similar looking ...

Re: Is this expected?
One obvious difference between N. warasii and N. magnificus is that N. magnificus has a more bluish less shiny epidermis and N. warasii a dark green shiny one, as can be seen in your pictures above. When first introduced N. magnificus plants had a really blue epidermis but that got lost in our sunle...

Yes my Eriocactus section of Notocactus or Parodia are still flowering in Nottingham UK. Our winters now seem to be getting a few weeks later starting here due to gl0bal warming.
