Re: What now?

I repotted it in a pot almost twice the volume of the one it was in. We'll see how it does

Re: When do you introduce fresh air to your seedlings?

Plants need CO2 to grow, and cacti are really bad at absorbing CO2 from the air (the upside being they lose less water to the air). In a closed container they rapidly deplete CO2 and it takes time for the CO2 to diffuse into the container to replace uptaken CO2. This is an interesting theory. I'd n...

What's happening here?

I noticed some odd growth on this Coryphantha and I'm wondering what's happening with it 20210528_163722_copy_1129x845.jpg The perspective is a little weird in the picture, this growth isn't happening on the top but rather on one of the sides (the meristem is towards the bottom of the page and to th...

Re: What now?

Thanks anttisepp and Carbo!

It's in a 3.5"/9 cm pot. That's interesting about pot size. I'd never thought about that before. Have you found the size of the root system affects the character of the scion (especially in terms of amount of offsetting) or just the speed of growth?

Re: Pereskiopsis Growing Guide

Shane Have you seen this site? http://pereskiopsis.com/growing-cacti-from-cuttings/ I did I think a long time ago. I'd forgotten about it. I think it's by a forum member actually. There's a section specifically about growing Pereskiopsis http://pereskiopsis.com/pereskiopsis/ It actually has a good ...

Re: Aylostera not Rebutia?

There's a staggering amount of convergent ev0lution not just in distantly related plants like Cactus and Euphorbia, but also in closely related plants like Mammillaria and Epithelantha. As we learn more about cactus phylogeny, you can expect more splitting of large genera and lumping of small ones. ...

Re: Sources For Perlite

It's interesting, the price for 2 cubic feet of perlite doesn't seem to be much more than buying 2 or 3 8 quart bags of perlite (2 cf is 60 quarts). Gravel is the same way. Any size is the same price up to about 1 cf

Curious what you're doing with all that perlite if you care to share

Re: Creating a monstrose Pereskiopsis through grafting

But then, why is it that as soon as the apical shoot is removed, almost invariably in all plants, it is the shoots closest to apical that start growing first? Shouldn't those buds be "the most inhibited"? I assumed it was because the area closest to the apex would be the first to run low ...

Re: Sources For Perlite

Thank you for your answers. 🙂 The difference between gallons and cubic feet was confusing me so I thought I would just search for 4 cubic feet. The prices varied widely from 12.25 to 19.85 to 27.95 to even 57.99. 8-[ CropKing.com had the best price. Thanks again. 12.25 for 4 cubic feet (120 quarts)...

Re: Creating a monstrose Pereskiopsis through grafting

Thanks for sharing Jitesh. Very interesting results you've gotten. Even though I've made no progress, I'm glad somebody is! It's getting warm enough here my Pereskiopsis are waking up again. I will try another graft soon I thought monstrose cacti are just mutants lacking the production of inhibitory...

Re: Question about pereskiopsis leaf yellowing

I'm not sure I'd worry too much about the leaf yellowing unless it keeps happening. I mean it's just one leaf on two plants right? And you didn't find any signs of bugs or fungus on the plant? I don't know what the brown spots are. I see a lot of corking on the stems, but clearly the brown is differ...

Re: Looking for a topical insecticide for mealybugs

Thanks for the advice Steve! I didn't know imadacloprid was transdermal, I've only used it as a soil drench I haven't done my cacti this year, the plants it didn't work on were all winter active succulents. I thought it wasn't too late a month ago but the results say otherwise The bugs haven't reall...

Looking for a topical insecticide for mealybugs

I'm looking for a non systemic treatment for mealybugs. The last time I applied imadacloprid, it really wasn't effective (in contrast to other times I've used it). I don't know why but maybe it was the weather. It was back in April when we were having very hot sunny days alternating with cold cloudy...

What now?

I bought a small grafted Schlumbergera opuntioides online about a year and a half ago. It was just a small piece grafted on Echinopsis for propagation. It was starting to grow but then it developed rot at the graft. I saved a piece by grafting it to Pereskiopsis 20210515_124033_copy_538x540.jpg It's...
