Re: Places to See Cactus, SE UT, NM, W TX, etc.

I used to share habitat data on some of the more rare stuff on your list, but I no longer do, not with anyone. I have had a few bad experiences where people I thought were trustworthy have either dug plants or shared info (against my specific request) with people who dug plants. It's infuriating. Th...

Re: Grand Canyon Caverns AZ

Nice! I haven't been able to determine definitely if the claret cups along there are mojavensis or coccineus. They are great mounds, however. It's a cool area. Did you see any Agave utahensis up there?

Re: Echinocereus engelmanii?

That looks like Echinocereus "apachensis," which is a diploid in the fendleri group, with overlapping range with bonkerae. It's an interesting form from the Superstitions in AZ and if you compare flowers with fendleri or bonkerae you will see they are almost identical. 'apachensis' is not ...

Re: Favorite Echinocereus?

Thanks for all the replies! My presentation kicks off the conference at 9 in the morning on Saturday. Martin, I know you are a real expert in the genus and grow amazing plants! Look forward to meeting you. It looks like my presentation will be broken down into about 4 segments. Unusual spine/flower ...

Favorite Echinocereus?

Hello all- I am giving a presentation and co-leading a couple of cultivation workshops on the genus Echinocereus at the Sonoran X Conference in Tucson this coming Saturday morning and I thought it would be fun to conduct an informal survey here. What is your favorite species? If possible, explain wh...

Re: Pediocactus peeblesianus fickeisenii survey

Aha, well I don't have the Intermountain Flora yet so I missed it, but I look forward to checking it out. Thanks for the update. Did Pediocactus sileri change also? I thought I had heard it went to the plural possessive for similar reasons.

Re: Pediocactus peeblesianus fickeisenii survey

Yes, it was a great few days. Very difficult to find indeed, especially in some of the locales that have been compromised. The change to fickeiseniorum was published by Fritz H in his pedio book (in the combination Navajoa peeblesianus subsp. fiskeiseniorum) but has not been accepted yet and hasn't ...

Pediocactus peeblesianus fickeisenii survey

Volunteered some time earlier this week to do a few days of an extensive survey of P. peeblesianus fickeisenii at three different sites. The professional botanist who was conducting the survey was mapping and measuring at least 30 plants at each locale, interested in particular in multivariate analy...

Re: Cactus or Cacti?

We have a dual also. But it's the same as the singular. :-) "Are you going to the store?" can be addressed to one, two or a million people at once. We do have a few ways to try to specify. "Are you two going to the store?" "Are y'all going to the store?" Etc. The Wiki l...

Re: Ferocactus acanthodes or cylindraceus?

The trick with taxonomy is to separate out a bunch of different strands, if you really care about it, that is. In particular, the committee responsible for maintaining the rules of priority and typification, etc., has the final say on names that are in dispute. Of course it will be a very long time ...

Re: Ferocactus acanthodes or cylindraceus?

It may be that Hunt was incorrect in retaining cylindraceus. I found the only reference I have seen so far regarding this issue, Cactus Exploers #6, November 2012, page 25: "A proposal to reject the name Echinocactus(& Ferocactus) acanthodes submitted in 2011 has now been voted upon and is ...

Re: Cactus or Cacti?

my current pet peeve is using "cactus" for the plural. I realize it is just a preference. But that book _Cactus of Arizona_ always sounds like it is about one plant. :-)

Not sure, actually. Maybe they all are. I was thinking maybe some Pereskia aren't, technically?
