Re: How are you and your plants doing up north and east?

Sunny North East Florida is getting ready for the coldest night in 40 years ~5-8 C. I moved all the orchid cactus, and cold sensitive plants inside the house from the lanai. I put my Staghorn ferns in the garage and took my Neoreligia bromeliads out of the palm trees, and brought my tropical air pla...

Re: Columnar Cacti ID

Ivan: I bought Carnegia dirt cheap in Central Ontario at the Belgian Nursery (6.00 CAD for 8 inch) and found it at several other nuresries in Ontario. However, back in florida it is unusual to find and is relatively expensive on Ebay in the states.

Re: Unknown Shrub from Bahanas aka Euphorbia trucalli

hi Y'all Thanks for your ideas. It is not an alien life form but a fairly common Euphorbia trucalli aka pencil cactus. It is not a native of the bahamas but something was brought from there on a pleasure craft. I didn't see any latex so I sicounted Euphorbia, I saw it in a local bursery and the hort...

Rooting hormone for cuttings and seedlings

I have been wondering how many of Y'all use rooting hormone (Indole butyric acid) for rooting cactus and succulent cuttings. I never used before, as I mostly rooted Opuntias. However, recently I have been rooting Epis, Rhisapalis and Stapelia and broke down and bought a bottle. On another aspect, I ...

Re: What happened to my paper-spines?

I had the weirdest experience with a paper spine I planted in my Agave garden. It was a nice size transplant very healthy root system and the first pad about six inches tall and two additional pads about 2 and 3 inches. It was firmly planted in my Agave bed with a five inch deep root system. Two wee...

Re: Epi cuttings

All this discussion on temperatures for Epis got me and my wife going. Two nights ago it droped to 38 F ~ 3C. We didn't have frost but it got our mojos working. We brought our Hylocereus in from the patio into our lanai, The dragon fruit was a heavy Momma but I hope to have fruits next year. We don'...

Re: Florida Approved?

I have had success with the 3 Notocactus species outside in the summer. Since I have several N. leninhausi and haselbergia I can deal with a loss if they rot. My Thelocactus setispinus turned red with an accumulation of anthocyanins in the summer, however it had some nice blooms based on pictures my...

Re: Keeping track of your collection?

I keep most of my cacti documented in Powerpoint. I have one for my Florida and one for my Canadian collection. My Agaves are also documented in powerpoint, but my succulent catalogue has not been updated. I usually take a picure of a cactus when it comes in. I have Picasa but I am a microsoft perso...

Re: How many plants do you have?

We have a Florida home and a Ontario apartment where we spend the summer. In our Florida home we have over sixty plants in the dining, living and kitchen areas. We keep around 15 plants (aloes, kalancoes and a mixed pot of 6 cacti) out front. In our screened porch we have around 70 cacti species and...

Re: First Winter on the new bench

Thanks fore the info on Eriosyce being winter growers, I just aquired three species in September and they have been sitting still. I have lost several cacti in my outside garden with the Rainy summer/fall we had, subsequently I moved several plants either inside my screened Lanai or on the front por...
