Re: Gymnocalycium?

I would agree with G. saglionis, but at such a juvenile age, there is an outside chance it is also G. pflanzii. They are very hard to distinguish when young. When they flower though, it is quite obvious; pflanzii will have a red throat to the flower.

Re: a ...cereus of some sort?

I would guess it is a Chamaecereus. If so, it should creep and clump and flower prolifically.

Re: Help! Any ideas?

The first is an Espostoa of some variety, maybe lanata?; I have one similar in my yard. It has white/tan flowers.

The second is Trichocereus brevispinulosus.

Re: Appropriately potted?

I pot mine a bit deeper so they stand upright. But yours will do fine like that as well. Consider some top dressing to preserve moisture and tidy up appearance. It will also help the seedling stand upright. And yes, that species grows fast. I have some that are ~4 years old and the size of a softball.

Re: A few variegated cacti in Saguaro Park, Tucson

The Opuntia shown is likely insect damage from Chelinidea vittiger aequoris or similar, not variegation.

Re: Best Heat pad for germination

Maybe this is already known to you, but make sure you do not run heat mats without a thermostat/controller. It's very easy to cook the seeds under the right conditions of you let a mat run unchecked.

Re: Sowing old seeds

I store all mine in paper envelopes and indoors (67-80° F). I'm sure storage method plays some role, but a bigger part is the type of seed I think. Pachypodium, Euphorbia, and Adenium seed seem to lose viability very fast and drop off sharply after a year. I haven't seen that from most cactus specie...

Re: Does the seedlings go dormant when is too hot?

I've not played with growing seedlings in really hot weather since I keep mine indoors until they are mature enough to be potted up individually. However, I have definitely seen them go dormant from too much light. Now I watch for pink or red skin and if I see that, I use some paper to diffuse the l...

Re: So I decided to sow

But you can see lots of experiences here in the forum, and it is quite common to let the plants inside closed pots for a whole year, so not necessarily you will have to open the pots when they have six months. It can be earlier or later. You may have to learn how to know when it is the right time. ...

Re: What were your Results Buying "Variegated" Seeds?

I've had mixed results. I always buy with the understanding that I may get nothing out of it (no variegation). I think with variegated seeds, the name of the game is quantity. Plant as many as you can and hope you get a percentage up with something interesting. So when I'm looking for variegation, I...

Re: Grow light recommendations

Here is a small article I wrote for our local cactus and succulent society on the topic of grow lights. I don't know if it will help you in your selection or not, but maybe something from it will be of interest. When it comes to light we should be clear on one thing: there is no better source of lig...
