Re: Pereskiopsis growing methods
Unfortunately, my hydroponic pereskiopsis are not doing too well. They are growing but the new growth is light-green, almost yellow. It's not etiolated so it must be some nutrient missing or water ph is too high/low...I don't have any fancy meters to measure this, I thought peresk. would be happy w...

Re: Pereskiopsis growing methods
Hi. I'm not sure what you mean? Something like nutrient film technique? An air pump is already bubbling the solution and so far it seems enough oxygen is dissolved, I don't see any root problems. In the aquariums I've had in the past used a subsand filter to process fish wastes and oxygenate the wat...

Re: Pereskiopsis growing methods
Hydroponic growing seems more convenient to me for growing indoors. There's no soil, no watering, all I have to do is add a bit of fertilizer and switch the light on and off. In theory they also should grow faster then soil and seedlings grafted on them should also grow faster. I have also many per...

Re: Pereskiopsis growing methods
I have seen others in the past but they, from memory, were using bottles/flasks.
Your method looks to be superior to the ones I recall.
Please keep us updated with your work, looks most interesting.
Cheers

Re: Pereskiopsis growing methods
I'm in Muckenburra, Western Australia, we're just moving into Spring, late frosts this year.
Haven't lost any pereskiopsis but those plants exposed, even under tree cover, never look happy over winter.
Probably -5degrees C, would be the worst case here from my experience.
Cheers

Re: Pereskiopsis growing methods
One thing I should have mentioned, my plant is more than just likely, to be P. porteri.
Cold here now, frost already at 9pm last night, certainly slows the Pereskiopsis growth down.
Cheers

Re: Pereskiopsis growing methods
Yep, it very possibly was taken from feral plants. I've seen them in Florida growing higher than houses. I've wondered if it's a breeding population. They DO flower when they get really tall, but if it's all the same clone, they're probably not breeding. It seems to be one of those things which is ...

Re: Fruits of Austrocylindropuntia vestita ripening.
Seedpods ripening, the seedpod with the ring around it has had some pereskiopsis pollen used on the flower.

Re: Pros and Cons of Grafting
Yeah, pereskiopsis almost never flowers in cultivation, so I think the scion gets relatively little hormones from the stock to encourage flowering. Some stocks that are more bonkers about flowers (like opuntia compressa or echinopsis) do better. Some columnar cacti don't flower until they're quite ...

Re: Fruits of Austrocylindropuntia vestita ripening.
Yes, mine usually, though not always, sets fruit and they are pink. I haven't cut one open for a few years but from memory I'd say they contain 15-20 seeds (they're fairly large seeds for a cactus). Germination is usually quite good. Such a shame that it's so easy to propagate from cuttings anyway!...

Fruits of Austrocylindropuntia vestita ripening.
Have some seed pods for what I believe is Austrocylindropuntia vestita, ripening. They are turning red, anyone have the species flower and set fruit who could confirm ripe fruits are red? Any idea as to how many seeds are likely to have set per fruit? Have uploaded two early photos to the species pa...

Re: Any ideas as to ID?
Had another look around since previous searches, think it highly likely it is Hylocereus ocamponis given Daiv Freeman's photo. (http://cactiguide.com/cactus/?genus=Hylocereus&species=ocamponis) Possibly when I searched before my specimen was not doing as well as it is now. The cutting given to m...

Any ideas as to ID?
Hi
Any ideas as to what this is, assume it is most likely to be either a Hylocereus or Selenicereus.
It quite hardy growing during the Winter just finished when all but some specials, had shutdown. New growth shows no damage due to cold, for here Western Australia, or rain.
Cheers

Epicotyl seedling graft to Hylocereus
Hi In October 2015 I grafted three seedlings of a H. undatus x H. undatus cross to a Hylo rootstock. Was surprised to see how one scion developed, it appears to think it is an Epi hybrid. At the moment, Spring here, it has produced numerous flower buds, be most interesting to see what develops. Anyo...

Re: Selenicereus NOID
Thanks 7george
I doubt it is H. monacanthus, the stigma is too robust, more like H. undatus, the stigma lobes are not bifid, ovary has scales rather than spines.
Thanks for the suggestion though.
