Re: How much time need it to bloom

Mine bloomed at ~ 5 cm diameter, so maybe next year. Semi-shade is maybe the best for this graft.

Re: Heat waves ?

At least nights are getting cooler and days are shorter now. We will get use to the heat ... and the summer will end up suddenly.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms next week. Means these will miss our neighborhood. 8)

Re: Heat index QUESTION

Lot of ecotypes among cacti. Mamms and other mexicans enjoy high heat and grow better and faster in midsummer but would like high day-night contrasts so cool outside placement with some shade is perfect. Mountain southamerican species, many Notocactus go dormant at high heat. Chileans also grow well...

Re: Winter preparations Question?

My unheated basement is my only option and best option but most of the time the temperature is around 62 F. I might need to give a few cacti a sip of water every 4 weeks. Just remember that cacti will not "dry out" from being held some months without watering. And moisture can stimulate s...

Re: Winter preparations Question?

Some species can start growing at these temps, esp. at low light conditions. So for California maybe outdoor wintering under shelter would be a better solution?

Re: Gymnocalycium horstii ssp. buenekeri: Male or female?

I did not know about this species to have (functionally) male or female plants either. Have read this about G. bruchii . We have to see flowers in detail inside and realise witch parts (pollen sacs/anthers or stigma) are purely developed and are not likely to be fertile. It is also possible that you...

Gymnocalycium calochlorum – what is the diameter of that plant? First flower or not?
I like these deep pots.

Re: Days of my cacti lives - in pictures

Nice ‘pet’ hare..😃 Aren’t there any predators in the neighbourhood? Not many predators between houses, just some skunks seen but these are not a threat for rabbits. Coyotes live in parks along the river but rabbits outnumber them for sure. The rabbit helps with the grass too so I can have more time...

Re: Heat index QUESTION

Wish I could take credit for it, Joe, but it hadn't occurred to me either until I started following this forum - those are ideas I picked up here. Roots of plants in the ground aren't subjected to as much heat or cold as the tops are, so they aren't as adapted for extreme temperatures. Even hot cli...

Re: Planting seedlings how to prevent fungi

Sterilization of seeds, pots and soil is the only way. Sealed for several months until they reach size to be treated as grown-up cacti.
