Re: Anza-Borrego this spring

Nice pictures . Hard to say if that's the Mojave or Sonoran desert ? I think most is considered a part of Sonoran desert, even with elevation and moving to the East flora changes significantly. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53669881833_3cee1f5ac5_h.jpg Cylindropuntia ganderii. https://live.st...

Re: Sowing Seed in Pure Mineral Mix

If in the water before and after the germination is added some fertiliser seedlings can grow during at least 6 months or the whole first season in inorganic mix. These below are 2 - 3 months old in a mix of perlite, vermiculite and sand. A modification of "jar method" under daylights with ...

Re: Seedlings stopped growing.

Temperature average around 72°F/ 22°C. This seems to me to be quite low. Not sure about the succulents, but cacti seedlings prefer at least 25 - 30°C or even 30 - 40 daily maximums for many species. Of course proper humidity is preferred in that case. Fungi are less aggressive at high temps so the ...

Mostly on windowsills. Some go outside to the yard for summer 5 months and few cold-hardy reside in the garden or pots year-round.

Re: Moorten Botanical Garden is still opened

Old tubercles always die but the care matters. That greenhouse is quite shaded, at about 50% or more. Also Leuchtenbergia in culture are in two different varieties that have different body colors and maybe tubercles' longevity. Fleshy roots store juices in a dry period so aboveground parts can dry o...

Re: First visit to Joshua Tree Nat. Park

Hey, sorry for the delay in reply. Mammillaria tetrancistra and dioica. JT is smack dab in tetrancistra's range, which extends north up through Death Valley almost into the White Mountains. JT is a little north for dioica--which is more often seen a little to the south in Anza Borrega or on the coa...

Re: Post winter watering

It depends on your climate and also on species you grow. I prefer graduate increase of watering in the spring, because weather here is cool with sudden changes. Some of my home plants have being watered the whole winter with bigger intervals and some get water just starting in May.
