Re: Pumice alternatives..
Unfortunately I threw the bag away, and have already mixed it with coir and soil, but just be sure it is NAPA oil-(or floor) dry, item # 8822, (important). It looks like, and is about the size of cat-litter, but does not turn mushy when wet. I would add that if you are using a product that gets mush...

Optunia Santa Rita pads...
I was wondering if anyone has had any luck planting O. Santa Rita pads, or any prickly pear pads for that matter... I received 2 about 5 months ago, and planted them as instructed by the seller. They are still alive, and well rooted, but the purple color disappeared long ago. :( The only growth is t...

Re: Pumice alternatives..
Thanks, snagel... I took your advice, and although I had to drive about 42 miles, I managed to find a NAPA auto parts store and purchase a 25 pound bag of the NAPA # 8822 for a little over 7 bucks. Well worth the trip!

Re: How do you know that a cactus need watering?
I asked this exact same question a while back, and someone suggested I buy a moisture meter. So, I went online to a popular auction site and bought one for about ten dollars. It was a HUGE help, since, like you said, you can't look inside the pot! All you do is stick the thin probe into the soil, an...

Pumice alternatives..
Hi all.. I have been using a pumice purchased online, which has worked well, but it is getting a bit cost prohibitive at $10.00 a gallon. I used to use Perlite, but I really do not like the way it rises to the top when watering, even over the gravel top layer. I have read about the NAPA oil-dri, but...

Rebutia rot question..
Hi all.. I just lost the main body of my R. canigueralii to rot after 4 months, so I separated the 2 large healthy pups that were on the side, (which had healthy roots), as well as a few of the smaller pups (also with tiny roots) from the top. It received about 4 hours of filtered morning sun daily,...

Cylindroptunia pests....
Hi everyone... I hope someone can help me out here. Last week, I noticed that my C. fulgida (cristata) had started to develop small, shiny black areas on about a dozen of the aeroles. After viewing them with a magnifying glass, I surmised that they are some sort of nasty pests, and I attempted to lo...

Color changing Tephrocactus
Hi all.. I have a T. articulatus, approximately 6 inches tall, in 2 main segments, equal in size. It is very healthy, but I have noticed that the upper segment has begun turning a "purplish-gray". Both sections were the same pale green color about 2 weeks ago, and there is no new growth fr...

Re: ID
I will second the werneri, Dan. I have one myself, and the aeroles are getting "furrier" as it ages. Mine gets morning sun only, and is doing great. Joseph

Re: some .... cristata
Hi! Looks to me like the one in the # 2 photo is a cristata form of Austrocylindroptina subulata, or "crested Eve's needle". I've never seen one this "hairy", though! Hope this helps! Joseph

Free Melocactus concinnus seeds...
Hi all! I have a limited number of M. concinnus seeds I recently harvested and was wondering if anyone wanted any. I have kept a few for myself, but I have enough extras (for now) to send 3 or 4 people a dozen each. The parent is an absolutely gorgeous, VERY healthy 7 inch wide little beauty, and on...

Melocactus concinnus fruit...
Hi all... I have a 6 inch wide Turk's cap with a one inch cephalium), and it has just started popping out fruit. Am I mistaken in thinking that it had to have been pollinated by the same species for this to occur, or could the fruit be sterile? If anyone thinks it may not be sterile, I would like to...

Looking for central FL. cacti enthusiasts...
Hi! Just wondering if there are any cacti enthusiasts in the central FL. area.. I am a relatively "newb" collector, (74 species, and growing), and am looking for advice on the nuances of growing and maintaining cacti in this area, and how best to keep them healthy and happy, especially in ...
