Re: ID help please
Looking at Llifle's synonymy under Notocactus mammulosus (You need to click on "see all synonyms") the combination for P. submammulosus does not seem to have ever been made under Parodia if his synonymy is correct? http://www.llifle.com/Encyclopedia/CACTI/Family/Cactaceae/20042/Notocactus_...

Re: Liquid gold (water)
There are devices to collect it from your house or outhouse rainwater guttering and downpipe. The water fills the water but until it gets to overflow level then the water overflows down the bottom of the downpipe as it did previously, meaning you don't waste any rainwater until the butt is full. The...

Re: Do Mammillaria have extrafloral nectaries?
I can't find any reference to Mammillaria's, but Coryphantyha's which may be mistaken for Mammillarias often have. However they are increasingly being found in other genera too like some Opuntia's. https://www.cactus-art.biz/schede/CORYPHANTHA/Coryphantha_echinoidea/Coryphantha_echinoidea/Coryphanth...

Re: British Show Rules
The problem with all show plants Mrs Green is they tend to go around the show circuit and people remember them. Therefore what difference Social Media would make I fail to see since its not the public that votes for them but a qualified judge, supposedly working to a set of rules on how the plants s...

Re: LF: Pterocactus, Weberocereus, Brachycereus, Tephrocactus, Aztekium seeds
Afraid I can't help you being in the UK as we cannot send cuttings of Pterocactus abroad. I have plants of almost all the various species, but if you are growing them from seed you may find this free to download book on Pterocactus by Norbert Sarnes, who is the current expert on the genus, of use. h...

Re: Is Lophophora cultivation legal in USA?
In Britain you can grow most things as long as you don't misuse them, apart from things like Cannabis which is I suppose our equivalent of your Lophophora ban where possession not only use in banned. Many grow Opium Poppies in their gardens as ornamentals. Though some claim our climate is not hot en...

Re: Bottom water top water your cacti question?
I once made a remark to a speaker who advised bottom watering for a certain genus that "it doesn't rain upwards in S. America. :D Really it can depend whether you are an ardent shower or just a general collector. Some of the shows people tend to water from below since it does not remove the woo...

Re: Prune or trim roots Question?
Regarding your lost photo's did you forget to press "Submit" after compiling your post? I have forgotten to that once or twice when using "Preview" as all the pictures were then shown but I forgot to press "Submit" and moved on loosing my post. :( The other thing might ...

Re: Prune or trim roots Question?
As with garden plants they used to advocate trimming any broken root ends since a clean cut straight across exposed less tissue to pathogens than a ragged tear. However unless it is to fit it into a container there is no real point in cutting healthy roots. If you do trim allow time for roots to hea...

Re: Rebutia heliosa Theresae?
Cacti flowers can be beautiful but some can have very tiny insignificant flowers and also some very big ones according to the genus. Epithelantha bokei, with tiny whitish/yellow insignificant flower in the centre. The fruits are much larger and more spectacular than the flowers. Epithelantha-bokei.j...

Cactus & Succulent shows around the world work to different rules and have different styles of judging. Therefore you may be interested to read how British rules set by the British Cactus & Succulent Society differ from yours? One difference is as long as the pot is clean and undamaged it do...

Re: Rebutia neocumingii / Weingartia ???
I for one do agree with combining Weingartia and Sulcorebutia since they do not belong in Hunt's "Lumped" Rebutia. Hunt's classification was based on morphology not DNA Sequencing which has shown many of Hunt's "Lumped" genera are polyphyletic (= " a group of organisms) deri...

Re: What makes crested/monstrose cacti?
Fasciation (note not fascination = no "N") meaning cristates and monstrous plants is caused by an upset in the cells at the growing points. With monstrose cacti there are obviously latent growing points at every areole which is why we get offsetting, but in monstoose cacti they are trigger...
