Re: Let's grow some Melocactus!

I grow M. curvispinas. They are native to rocky slopes, often in full sun, but at about 800 meters elevation. Coldest nights are probably never less than 15 C but are in the dry season so rot is less likely. Daytime highs are in the high 20s C. Cuba is probably much hotter and moister if they are ne...

Might want to check this free download:

It's in Spanish but you could probably auto translate it somehow as necessary.

Re: Some info for southern Nevada

I rarely got to Las Vegas but Mt. Charleston has a bunch of ecosystems as you go from the valley to pine covered mountains. iNat only shows them for further north,

Re: Hualapai Mountain Park near Kingman AZ

Thanx, I will be in the area in Feb. I also found out recently that there is a second species of Nolina in the area and I have no good fotos of banana yucca. Also on the hit list, last year I swear I saw an agave on christmas tree pass, went home to see the literature and found nothing listed for th...

Re: Hualapai Mountain Park near Kingman AZ

Not real familiar with elk but they are common in the area because the county park is off limits to hunting. This one was eating along a well traveled road. I have seen deer in the campground and have been told mountain lions are also common but have never seen one. Outside of the campground and res...

Re: Hualapai Mountain Park near Kingman AZ

I cross referenced the claret cup with iNaturalist.org and the species listed for this area is echinocereus bakeri, a relatively new species. Mojavensis is found to the northeast near the Grand Canyon. Not much on this species online but this is useful: https://www.birdandhike.com/Veg/Species/Cactus...

Some wild life photos

Coming back from a local area where I study native cacti I decided to try to get some wildlife photos. I returned on the dirt road at about 12 kph with my window down and my camera set on auto on the passenger seat. The lens was set at its longest length, in this case 135 mm. Not much happened till ...

Re: The new cactus lexicon

Yes these sort of books are pricy and often fetch more second-hand than when originally published. They seldom get reprinted and even if they do are not up to the quality of the original. Always remember that classification is a matter of opinion as to where you deliminate generic boundaries and no...

Don't forget the DVDs sold by the US CSSA. They have copies of the Journal from the 1929 to 2003. https://cssa.myshopify.com/collections/dvds Also, Joel Lode has his taxonomy list online for free download. this is modern and includes the new DNA based changes. https://www.cactus-aventures.com/Taxono...

Another way to grow epiphytic cactus

If you live in a frost free area, preferably over 10 degrees C, you can hang a plant in a hanging basket on a tree and with time it will grow onto the trees. This E.phyllanthus phyllanthus has rooted into a depression in the trunk marked with a red X and will likely grow all over the trunk at which ...

Re: Season's Greetings 2022

I went back to scout it out. I didn't want to push my way through the brush but maybe on a future visit I can go down the road a little and ask permission to enter through a farm. The Mams look like M. voburnensis from a distance. This is the same palnt David Hunt identified as M karwinskiana when h...

Re: UPDATED with new photos: Acanthocereus tetragonus?

A complete description needs floweres, fruits, and seeds. I have spent up to 10 years IDing some plants but your's is mature so you should rap it up within 1 year. My acanthocereus here in Central America have considerable variation. It is typical for seedlings to start out very spiny and 6 winged a...

Re: The new cactus lexicon

I have the print literature as references but increasingly relay on Kew Plants of the World Online as it has the scientific credentials and the online format can be updated more frequently. Awaiting Lode's new book but scientic books of this size are inherently pricey.
