Re: Is this "skinny point" going to be a problem?

Yes. You will have two plants. If you cut it I would do so just below the thin part and bury it as the new shoot will likely be very close to the top of the cut. Do you know why it grew thin?

Re: Is this "skinny point" going to be a problem?

In my opinion - if you treat this cereus as a standard plant and water it regularly etc etc it will probably thrive and grow quickly and snap. If you mistreat it a bit, and slow down the growth rate it will let that area harden up a bit, but it will never thicken. However the plant will take a lot l...

Re: Cuttings advice

I personally have trouble getting cactus to root in dry media. I usually leave them sit a while to callus, and then start watering. Sometimes it backfires, but most of the time they root fine.

Next time some asks me why I grow cactus, I might just show them these photos.

Thanks for sharing.

Call me crazy, but I like having ants around. Why just the other week ants showed me what plants had root mealy bugs. And when I see a couple of ants on a plant without nectaries I know I need to take a closer look, usually I'll spot a bug I need to squish.

The second one looks like an Austrocylindropuntia Subulata. The bottom of the photo shows some monstrose growth, so if I had to guess I would say that part of your plant started growing normally again. And the green spines are actually leaves, this is one of the few cacti that produces long lasting ...

Thanks.

Sounds like lithops aren't too hard to grow in principle then. But as I've seen you say in other threads, you have to learn to know your plants, where they are from and how that fits with where you live.

Ok, I think I get it.

I should have thought about it in terms of animals, when we didn't get our dogs desexed early enough a brother and sister mated, but the pups weren't copies of the grandparents.

Thanks Sutremaine and iann.

Thanks iann. Just so I'm clear, if I was to be treating them as winter growers, they would still shed their leaves in winter, it just may be that they wouldn't finish absorbing them until much later in the year than if I kept them dry? Or I would I continue to water them through autumn to get them t...

Pollinating hybrids for pure plants once more?

I'm going to use Faucaria as my example, as this is where my hybridising experiments currently lie. I'm also putting my high school genetics into play, which I expect is correct in only the most basic of terms, and maybe not even then. Situation 1. Say I crossed F. Candida (white flowers) with F. Tu...

Do Lithops grow like Crabs and Snakes, and other questions

Do lithops need to shed their skin each year to get bigger? Or do they do it each year to reboot and repair any damage they may have suffered? Also, a question on seedlings. My seedlings went out in the sun last summer, produced 'proper' leaves, and then through winter produced new leaves again. Wil...

peterb , there's plenty of O. Stricta to be found in Australia :p. Santa Rita, Basilaris, and a few others are also show up on ebay pretty often. Ultimately, I think its because a determined effort to import seeds of banned species would often be sucessful. I've only had about 20% of my seed packag...

I don't know that you will need more heat, mine are open fairly well even in the morning, and I think they are opening through the day when I am not at home.

I'd say wait a few more days and they will probably be open.

I could be wrong, but it sounds like you are looking at someone on ebay. What you want to go to is miles2go.com
