Re: Astrophytum developed spots
Agreed, although I'll go one step further -- of the Astrophytums I grow (asterias, capricorne, 'capristigma' hybrid, and myriostigma), myriostigma is the only Astro that really doesn't like the constant all-year humidity in my area. I'm growing 64 of my 68 cacti in a pumice-granite gravel mix (no s...

Re: Thrips
Thank you @ohugal and @jerrytheplater. I think I will get some lacewing eggs from Arbico. $30 for 5000 eggs.
Still open to other suggestions though. I went to the local Armstrong nursery yesterday but left without purchasing anything. I definitely need to do mor research there…

Re: Thrips
That is a great suggestion, I hadn’t thought of introducing beneficial insects. In the past I had lacewings in my yard, so they might be a good option seeing that they like the environment. I just wonder how it looks when I have the larvae crawling on the cacti, whether that would bother me?

Thrips
I’m a bit disheartened. I used to have a large collection of tropical hibiscus and eventually gave up on it because thrips was ruining the blooms.
Now I notice thrips running around my cacti. What can I do to eradicate them?

Very interesting. Tbh I know close to nothing about hydroponic plant care, in fact I thought it was done with those clay pebbles. Do you have any other posts about this? I’m really intrigued. You may be getting more than you bargained for! This will keep you busy: https://www.cactiguide.com/f...

Re: New plants/ newbie questions.
I grow the vast majority of my cacti in a completely soil-less pumice and granite gravel mix, although my Eriosyce senilis and Tephros do best with a 50/50 soil and pumice mix. For growers living in a relatively humid climate, I'd recommend a mix tilting more in favor of the mineral component (or y...

Winter dormancy in SoCal
I last watered my outdoor cacti 2 weeks ago and am wondering if I should water them again. We added a little grandson to our family since then so I did not pay any attention to the temperatures here in Orange County, CA. At what nighttime temps do cacti become dormant? Should I water mine one more t...

Re: Help me understand overwintering in SoCal
Keep them dry. It'll ensure your plants stay dormant and prevent etiolation. I keep my summer plants totally dry from around late October to early March. The one exception is a Melocactus that I occasionally watered but brought in every night. Supposedly these don't like dry winters and like temper...

Help me understand overwintering in SoCal
After years and years of keeping my cacti indoors as mere house decor, I let them enjoy summer outdoors for the first time this year. They loved it (I think :D ) My biggest problem is my little yard, which faces NW and because of the strong afternoon sunlight has a lot of palm trees, etc, for shade....

I don't know why anyone would run a succulent and cacti shop and not have ID on their plants  1. https://uliseng.zenfolio.com/img/s/v-10/p55282471-5.jpg https://uliseng.zenfolio.com/img/s/v-10/p406600050-5.jpg 2. https://uliseng.zenfolio.com/img/s/v-10/p518267511-5.jpg https://uliseng.zenfolio...

Pilosocereus gounellei is not very tall but instead it is multibranched. Here are some pictures of this species in the habitat in northeast Brazil: https://www.naturezabela.com.br/2011/03/xique-xique-pilocereus-gounellei.html?m=1 Here are the pictures of my plant: 20220907_134012_copy_600x800.jpg20...
