Re: Blemish? Question. Black stuff on cacti Question.

When you said "similar to mold in my shower." you pretty much nailed it. Could be due to extrafloral nectaries, which many plants have, including many cacti. These secrete nectar on various parts of the plant to attract ants, which benefit the plant in a number of ways. If ants don't clea...

Re: Blemish? Question. Black stuff on cacti Question.

You may be able to blast it off with a fine water spray. I use one of the pump up mist sprayers with the nozzle twisted to produce a needle jet instead of spray. You can also use a spray on fungicide to help stop it forming. As Spence says it is not usually detrimental to the plant, but can be unsi...

Re: Blemish? Question. Black stuff on cacti Question.

opuntia looks healthy, you have no reason to panic, it is a hardy cactus. Thank you. Awls I know is it wasn’t there a few weeks ago and not sure that this opuntia Argentina was safe. After spider mites over the winter I guess I’m just paranoid now about any little blemish. Thank you again 🙏🏽 AE0FC7...

Thank you 🙏🏽. Got it.

Re: New pups Question.

Pups, or offsets, are normal unless the growing point of the plant has been damaged (often known as "gone blind") then the plant has to offset anyway to provide a new growing point. As others have said it is a personal choice as to whether you want to grow a single stem or a multi-stemmed...

Re: Bottom water top water your cacti question?

Spence's last paragraph sums up bottom watering. Nothing wrong as long as after the pots are saturated you tip the water in the tray away and let them drain. Also if your pots are not having the water from their drainage hole regularly running to waste (as in plants grown in the house) in order to ...

Re: Heat index QUESTION

Lot of ecotypes among cacti. Mamms and other mexicans enjoy high heat and grow better and faster in midsummer but would like high day-night contrasts so cool outside placement with some shade is perfect. Mountain southamerican species, many Notocactus go dormant at high heat. Chileans also grow wel...

Re: Winter preparations Question?

Some species can start growing at these temps, esp. at low light conditions. So for California maybe outdoor wintering under shelter would be a better solution? Yes -- it's a blessing Keith and I enjoy here in SoCal. Not sure if it does Joe any good, so I'll ask him a couple of questions: Do you ex...
