Question about spots on some of my cactuses
I have these spots on some of my plants and I'm wondering what they are. Virus? Fungus? I have these plants separate from my others. In the first picture you can see some aerial roots sprouting out of the plant, not sure if it's connected to the spots or if it's just due to high humidity. https://i....

Re: Is Lophophora cultivation legal in USA?
Just revisited this topic and found that there is a bill that is pending in California (SB-519) where certain hallucinogenic substances will be decriminalized, but sadly peyote (the entire Lophophora genus) is excluded and will continue to be illegal if the bill passes. The lawmakers cite its endan...

Re: Preferred soil mix for Echinopsis
I use the chicken grit. There's a brand here in the midwest called Cherry Stone that's a nice pink-purple color. I don't measure anything out exactly but roughly 25% chicken grit, 25% perlite, 50% peat based potting soil. Average site of the chicken grit is like 3/16". This works well in my are...

Re: What PPM range for Dyna-Gro All Pro?
Steve. The OP specifically asked for the concentration of the Dyna-Gro, not any one particular nutrient. I asked for clarification, and that is what he wanted to know. He has not replied since. Since he did reply, I just wanted to follow through on what you said about diluting 1.05 ml Dyna-Gro/3785...

Re: Is Lophophora cultivation legal in USA?
Maybe I'm wrong, but that list is for the cultivation of "psychoactive cacti", not just L. williamsii specifically. In the US, cultivation of L. williamsii is absolutely illegal (aside from the Native American religious exceptions as others have mentioned). Cultivation of psychoactive Tric...

Re: Imidacloprid soil soak?
Bonide BND609, it's like $12 for a qt and is higher concentration than most consumer imidacloprid formulations, so you don't have to mix so much of it into the water.
Never really had a problem with mites so I don't have any recommendations.

Re: watering & fertilizing for mineral soil mix
Right, they don't exactly expire, but sometimes insoluble salts can crash out. With the multi-part ferts, Ca ions are kept in a separate bottle from phosphate and sulfate ions because they form insoluble salts together. Same for zinc ions, which form an insoluble salts with phosphate ions. So what t...

Re: Wintering cacti to encourage flower growth questions.
That's a good idea, thanks for the suggestion. I have a lot of cacti that I'm gonna need to repot next year, if I unpot them now before winter dormancy and store them bare root I'd save a lot of space.

Re: watering & fertilizing for mineral soil mix
Another option are hydroponics fertilizers- one of the multi-part types. General Hydroponics for example has the Flora line. I use Flora Micro (NPK 5-0-1, reported as P2O5 and K2O) and Flora Bloom (NPK 0-5-4), equal volumes of each. If I use 2 ml of each per gallon of water, I end up with the follow...

Re: Wintering cacti to encourage flower growth questions.
I would love to hear any of your personal setups or experience with putting your cacti in winter dormancy. Well, if you wintering cacti outdoors, there is not many options to implement, everything depends on your climate. Maybe just provide some winter shelter to avoid moisture in coldest time arou...

Re: growing inside
I know that Bonide recently came out with an acephate-based product for consumer use. Kind of an old-skool systemic insecticide but it's pretty nasty stuff and I wouldn't want to use it on anything indoors. The reason they brought it back is because neo-nic resistance is becoming more and more commo...

Re: Use of Ammonium Sulfate fertilizer
I'm growing 65 in a soil-less mix, so obviously there's no soil to support bacteria. Does it mean that those 65 plants aren't able to take up N from the Ammoniacal component in the fertilizer I'm using? Inquiring minds want to know, and if Mike gives us an answer, I'll post a follow-up comment. Yep...

I'm kinda curious as to why you're including Pyrethrin in your watering solution. Me too. I think the 'why' is fairly obvious, but does it work? :) I'll come at this in a different direction... Bill, are you having mealybug and/or spider mite problems with your plants? If so, the Pyrethrin should k...

Erwinia (bacterial soft rot) heat treatment
Hello. I degrafted a couple Lophophora diffusa from Pereskiopsis last year. And I left them in the cold dry basement over the winter before I finally tried to root them. One of them started developing a soft spot on the side, poking at it revealed it was rot with that distinct Erwinia smell. No idea...
