You have to cut at least 1 to 2 inches from the infection. The fresh cutting surface should have all white color and the ring shape in the middle.

You can disinfect the fresh cutting with rubbing alcohol 71% or 91%

Buy an opuntia specie. It will help you to gain more experience because they are tough to kill. I think there is a " Red Button" opuntia in the Wal-Mart's garden. You should look for it....

You should put your cutting cactus in a dry place not in the pot with dirt like that. Splashing the alcohol 91% in the cutting area so when the alcohol evaporate, the cutting area will be dry too.
