Re: Pretty sure this is fungus at the base of my cacti... any fungicide recommendations?

Fungicides can stop fungal spores from creating new sites of infection, but nothing available to home users can stop the fungus from expanding once it's entered the plant's tissues. Some advanced fungicides available to commercial users can "reach back" a few days and arrest fungus infect...

Re: Pretty sure this is fungus at the base of my cacti... any fungicide recommendations?

Fungicides for plants are preventive, they won't cure an established fungal infection. I don't think that your plants have a fungal infection anyway. I think people get confused because fungal infections in humans and animals can be cured with fungicides, but actually the fungicide just arrests the...

Re: Pretty sure this is fungus at the base of my cacti... any fungicide recommendations?

I have an Opuntia like yours and that looks similar to the base of yours on photo 5. Knowing me though I'd treat them all anyway. The fungicide I use on my all my plants is Mancozeb, although I'm not sure if that's available in the US? Hmm, looks like it's only for sale in Europe. I see that it is ...

Carpkel wrote: Fri Feb 22, 2019 1:26 am The brown discoloration near the base of the cacti appears to be corking and not a fungus. As a cacti ages, the lower "trunk" will create a thick brown corking resembling the bark on a tree.
On all of them? Even the ones that look a bit cracked? Some of these are very young.

Pretty sure this is fungus at the base of my cacti... any fungicide recommendations?

My first thought was rot but it is firm and when I checked the roots there was no damage. Six of my outdoor cacti have developed a brown coloration near the base--3 Opuntia, 1 Hylocereus, 1 Cereus, and 1 Echinopsis. (My Mammillaria and Parodia seem unaffected.) Pictures are below, I suspect fungus b...

Re: Overwintering outdoor cacti indoors? (zone 10a)

The warmth indoors might be a problem for cacti that'll want to grow, and low lighting leads to etoliation. When I got a collection going in 2011, I rigged up a rain shelter with plastic sheeting from Home Depot. Unfortunately the thing fell apart by the end of winter due to months of UV exposure, ...

Overwintering outdoor cacti indoors? (zone 10a)

I'd rather bring them in because we get winter rain. Indoors they would be in low-ish light but the house is heated so they would not stay cool. Would this be a problem? Am I better off just throwing a tarp over them?

How to overwinter new propagations and pups?

I have a pot with mature succulents and tiny propagations and I'm wondering what I should do with it over the winter. Will the props make it with less light and less water or is it worth sticking the pot under the seedling lamp (4ft fluorescent, 2800 lumens)? Here is a terribly-lit picture of the bo...

Re: Do my Frithia seedlings look okay?

Mesembs should not still be in a baggie. Lithops can stay bagged for a few months, but others should be taken out once they germinate - unlike cacti, they don't like 100% humidity. They don't look too bad, but could use more light - getting them out if the baggie will help with that, too. Thank you ...

Do my seedlings look okay? Are they etiolated?

2 months old, baggie method, kept on a southwest facing window with an overhang so they are in bright indirect light for most of the day with an hour or two of direct sunlight through the thick window pane. This is my first time around so I don't really know what I'm looking for. They look so elonga...

Do my Frithia seedlings look okay?

I sowed some Frithia pulchra 3 months ago (July) along with some Echeveria and cacti. At the time I didn't realize that Frithia is a mesemb. It's in succulent mix watered from the bottom and kept in a baggie on a southern-facing windowsill with an overhang (not much direct light). They germinated fa...
