Re: Are you leaving the heat mats on over night?

I leave mine on 24 hrs/day. I've wondered if I should turn it off at night. I don't know if it makes a difference. I think on/off cycle if the lights the lights can provide some temperature variation. My temperature sensor is under/between the pots, so it keeps the temperature constant there, allowi...

Re: The correlation between temperatures and flower colour in Schlumbergeras

Evidently if buds set in the wrong temperature the white flowers can gain a pink tinge [...] From the Web:- "A colour shift of a white Christmas cactus can also be due to slightly different environmental conditions. They may be pure white at warm temperatures, but take on a pinkish cast when i...

Re: Creating a monstrose Pereskiopsis through grafting

Thanks for the updates Jitesh! Very interesting results you're getting! I lost the grafting season this year to moving and rats and caterpillars eating my Presekiopsis. I'm hoping to try again next season I am thinking the half part which was getting full sunlight have more monstrose effect than oth...

Re: Nes and his balcony of lame plants

Which leds me to wonder how strict this law is enforced in the US? What I've heard is not too strictly, unless you're growing them for sale, or possessing dried peyote. I haven't heard of anyone being busted for growing it for horticultural reasons. Owning land where peyote is growing naturally doe...

Re: Oddly grafted cacti or?

Are the two scions really grafted ‘sideways’ or could it be that the stronger green parts of the scions forced the growing points downward? I'll add in another possibility: the appearance is because of a weird camera angle (I think this is less likely than your theories, but it's possible) I think ...

Re: Looking for Pereskiopsis

That's really strange. I bought 5 for $10 a few years ago. Many sellers were selling them cheaply back then. Maybe there's less supply right now because it's winter? That said, 5 can still be had for $15 on ebay or etsy https://www.ebay.com/itm/153509562150?hash=item23bde20726:g:8wsAAMXQLw1R0J9H[url...

Re: Schlumbergera ‘Enigma’

How strange. You see the monstrose Cereus with normal flowers, now here's a cactus with normal stems and monstrose flowers I wonder what the nature of this is. Floral meristems (I understand) start as vegetative meristems. So there's either a pathology in the meristem that only manifests in the flow...

Re: How is encounterability decided on the guide?

I think the encounterability on Daiv's opinion/experience of how common a plant was back when he made the site back in the early 2000s. It's pretty subjective and as others have noted things change with time That said, imo it's a great piece of information to have. It's a good check on an ID if you ...

Re: What now?

Here's another update:
I'm still trying to root the Schlumbergera cuttings. They are very difficult to root. I've tried rooting them in a baggie and in damp soil and neither has worked. I tried water next and it looks like possibly there's a root popping out of one of the cuttings

Re: Some questions about heat

Thanks for the responses. I feel like I have the situation under better control now (or at least I'm not panicking anymore haha). I redid the shade cloth setup and I feel better about it now. At my old place there was a more shade and I didn't fully appreciate how much until after my plants burned. ...

It's doing pretty well. It's bigger but not a ton of growth. I'm not sure what to do with it now. I'd like to degraft it but I'm not sure about it since the cut would be so big
