Cactus bargain of the week

Post by TimN »

I went saw an ad on craigslist here in Phoenix for a guy selling cactus. I bought some plants from him about 15 months ago and they have done fairly well.

I went over again today and picked up a bargain Ariocarpus fissuratus.

I got this gem for $10...

Here's a picture with a 5" steel rule. It's just a hair wider than 4" (10cm).

I got this Echinocereus for $20. I'm not sure what it is, but it looks closest to E pseudopectinatus to me.

Looks a lot like my E. dasyacanthus rectispinus. See if it flowers yellow next spring :)

I know nothing of your prices, so I can't tell. (would be expensive here for that last one), but I like the plants.

I hate to be the fly in the ointment....but, at those prices, he's probably digging them up illegally.

Apparently the guy selling the plants is the son of the owner. He just picks a number out of his ear when you ask about a plant. I think I got lucky on the A. fissuratus.

There are literally thousands of plants at this guys place. I don't think he's a catcus pirate, but you never know. I think he's had these plants for many years. There are many very large, old specimens. Tons of barrels including several that look like F. polycephalus (sp?) in 3' mounds.

They look like they are grown "hard" which is consistent with the rest of the property (i.e. not a lot of fastidious maintenance/rough around the edges).

Well done Tim... I reckon they're a real bargain, considering what I'd have to pay if I could find similar plants here!
