I've set seed on many of the plants listed as self-sterile, so I do wonder about the list. This self-fertile/self-sterile thing is a real mystery to me. I wonder if it is even possible to generalize. It seems many supposedly self sterile cacti can be "fooled" into setting seed by pollen from a completely unrelated plant. The seed comes true; it's not hybrid seed.

ya you are totally right. when usign the *2* entry system, its hard cause it would theoretcally be possible for many to be fooled, though teh way they are fooled may vary.peterb wrote:I've set seed on many of the plants listed as self-sterile, so I do wonder about the list. things like timing and method play a huge role. a great example is many people consider Hylocereus undatus self fertile, but really they just release/accept pollen and have their style much longer than their filaments to avoid selfing, but they "easily" self when those 2 things are overcome (ie with human hands)
persoanlyl i have started reconsidering the use of "self sterile/fertile" as definitive terms, as you say they are far from it.

I was wondering about that for saguaros. I dont see them listed on the list. I have had people tell me both ways. However I suspect that they are self-fertile. I mean after all when I had one I thought it put out the fruits, but I dont remember. I know that last year for the first bloom I had crap loads of fruits.
2 years ago there were some but a lot of them were in shock. Oh well I will talk to someone and find out all I could ever want to know about seeding saguaros.

Here's to you, all you insidious creatures of green..er I mean cacti.
