Nes and his balcony of lame plants
Nes and his balcony of lame plants
Starting this for personal logs.
Hope you enjoy my aggressive plant collection.
Entry 1:
Repotted this tephro alexanderi after I noticed 2 spider mites. Took it out of the nursery pot and hosed down the roots and cladodes. Little pot with cactus native to Queretaro de Arteago
Mammillaria Parkinsonii and (echinofossulocactus multicostatus?).

Entry 2
Tephrocactus Articularis Inermis is a weird one imo. They were soft and squishy the morning after I watered it, after not being watered for 2 weeks.
After 3 days the bottom cladodes hardened up and felt normal again. Quite the dramatic cactus.
Little Thelocactus, Leuchtenbergia and Thelobergia pot. Thought it would look nice with the scoria top dressing and large pieces of scoria. A little underwhelmed but still satisfied.

Caespitose pup that fell off of a friends clump. It had a tiny root but instead I decided to graft it in fear that I would kill it.
Only found P. Marginatus(for rootstock) at my local nursery. It was either that or a 60$ PC pachanoi. Got a couple of pachycereus to try some different plants. It was hard to find any accounts of P. Marginatus being use as a root stock, so I did some experimenting. Killed an ario bravoanus with a failed graft, but sulcorebutia rauschii and willy caespitose took. Last root stock is being used for a fricii but I just did surgery on that one yesterday, hoping it takes.
Flooding page with cactus pics later tonight.

Sulcorebutia Rauschii, never grafted, flowered in june but found no mate
I don't know what these two are called. Rauschii graft mentioned earlier, I took some other pups off but they aren't grafted, however they did grow roots sitting on my windowsill and I'm trying to grow those ungrafted. They won't be doing much so I won't post them for a while. Dudleya Pachyphytum x Caespitose, asked my school arboretum if they would give me dudleya hassei, dudleya saxosa, and brittonii seeds. They said no . They told me they would have a native plant sale this november, and i could buy them there. My financial aid rolls in on November usually, think I may just buy a couple of the hassei and saxosa for resale value. They did say they'd have good student discounts. baby retusus Avonia Quinaria getting ready to bloom. Dudleya species are slowly becoming my favorite plants as they are the only "rare" species of plant that I have been fortunate enough to see in habitat. Maybe I'll dig up a photo of a dudleya I saw on a cliff somewhere close to oregon on the 101. As well as some other more common dudleyas that grow near me.

Fricii on P. Marginatus
Re: Nes and his balcony of lame plants
Found a new columnar at my local nursery. Not sure what it is but I thought it would be cool try to a root stock that isn't P. Marginatus.
Re: Nes and his balcony of lame plants
Rotted a Neoporteria Odieri. Third cactus casualty here on the balcony of lame plants.
Hoping the graft takes, when I chopped off the head, the growth ring of the eriosyce was starting to turn brown. Finally finding some success with growing turbinicarpus from seed. They've been going for about 3 weeks now, will post soon.
Seeing success with seeds has inspired me to start grafting all my slow growers. Hoping to get more flowers and seeds from all my grafts, and eventually sell or trade my own seed grown plants.

Re: Nes and his balcony of lame plants
Update: L. Caespitose graft failed, was just stuck on by cactus juice. Same with the ariocarpus, and obregonia grafts. The ariocarpus died but the obregonia could still be grafted a second time. The neoporteria actually started to spread the rot to the rootstock.
Live and learn
I'm going to retry this till I get it right. Sacrificed my tephrocactus geometricus for graft attempts on the now spare rootstocks. Going to try hiding it from the sun this time around.

Did I see that right? $60 for a PC Pach? Ridiculous. It's like a weed.
Re: Nes and his balcony of lame plants
yeah, it was overpriced. IDK how much lower it should've been though because it was huge to be fair. been a long time since i've been to that nursery, I might go check sometime see what the prices are looking like.Aeonium2003 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 11:46 pm Did I see that right? $60 for a PC Pach?
