Haworthia or Gasteraloe?

Post by taylor-planter »

Hi there! I’m a first time succulent grower, I have a few now but I just picked this one up yesterday as a clearance from my local nursery. Not really sure what it is, but I’m pretty sure that the long spine coming out of it is just from low sun. Pulled it out of the pot it came in to find it’s 100% root, which is.. interesting.

I did a fair bit of research, and my best guess is that it’s some kind of deformed haworthia or gasteraloe. Any ideas? Also, any care tips for it would be greatly appreciated. I’m a dedicated pothos mom trying to expand to succulents and I’m not very familiar with them.

well looking at the base of it, I'd say Haworthia sordida, or one of the scabra varieties, but not sure ;)

After looking at some pictures, I think you’re definitely right about it being a sordida! It’s not very textured, so I don’t think it’s a scabra, but it’s also in bad shape so maybe I’ll see. Thank you!

I am not convinced it being Haworthia sordida. I would expect the leaves to be more upright.

Just to be clear, both the bottom and top are one plant? Not two separate ones? That would make more sense...
I suspect Haworthia sordida does tend to stay solitary.

There's some Aloe cultivars with a similar skin, so who knows. The weird growth on top could be caused by wrong conditions in the past, distorted it. Can we have a close up picture from above ?
