Green clumping barrel with red flower

Post by SimT »

Hi everyone.
I originally thought this was a Denmoza, but now it has flowered I have no idea. I have spent hours on the internet searching and cannot find anything close. The biggest barrel is about 25cm across. The flower has just opened. I would really appreciate any ideas for where next to look.
Many thanks.
Simone

Looks like a Soehrensia of the formosa group Simone, possibly S. korethroides as S. formosa has a yellow flower.

Rather too spiny for S. buuchii which does have a red flower. A couple of Soehrensia's in my greenhouse centre bed.

David Hunt lumped Soehrensia into Echinopsis of course. They are really very large bodied members of the Lobivia group and fairly winter hardy. They usually need to be a reasonable size to start flowering. There is however one that does flower as small as most Echinopsis.

Echinopsis formosa korethroides looks right to me too.

I thought Echinopsis buuchii, also goes by Soehrensia buuchii. Mine have less spines.

The name is actually Sohrensia bruchii (not buuchii unless that was just a typo)? Mine also has shorter spines as in my first illustration above.

Soehrensia or Echinopsis bruchii if you follow David Hunt's classification as with all of the Soehrensia's does vary in spine length. Probably they form a cline with one species merging into another.
