New succulent

Post by Meggchris »

I just recently purchased this succulent from Safeway. It was on sale for $2.50 probably because it was looking pretty sad. I decided to buy it in hopes I could save it. I'm super new to succulents and need some help identifying it as well. Are the leaves turning a redish color because they're dying? And did this happen because it was sitting inside Safeway where there was no sunlight? Or was it over/underwatered? If you guys could offer any information that would be awesome!!

As always, I have to give the disclaimer that I'm no succulent expert, but what I would guess is that those red leaves near the bottom are probably just going to drop off/be finished soon. They may have turned red from some kind of stress. The top part looks to be growing little by little, so it's very likely you can get it healthy again. I imagine, as you said, that because it was indoors it wasn't getting as much light as it wants. You could move it to a brighter place gradually so that it doesn't get shocked from a sudden change in brightness (not sure of your climate or sunniness level). You might want to remove the moss to see how the soil looks (moist? bone dry?) I'm afraid I don't know what type of succulent this is exactly.

First, does that pot have drain holes? If not, it needs some or a different pot. I would definitely get rid of the moss, nothing good can come from it. If you need something on the soil, use small gravel or some other top dressing that isn't moss or anything absorbent.

Change what's necessary and let it dry out, then see how things go. This plant doesn't look to be in bad condition...

The plant looks quite well, whatever it is. I would not fret about the red leaves. It is natural that they lose leaves now and then.

Remove the moss & give it a pot with a hole as necessary, just as TimN says. Please use soil without peat. Instead you can mix in a bit of sand. As you are new to the game: Do NOT water the plant after repotting, but some days or a week later. (This is a general rule with succulents incl. cacti).

And then:
Give the plant some rest to get accustomed to you and its new environment. Be patient.
