Hana have you noticed any big differences in degrafted and own root Astrophytum asterias?

I have collected asterias cultivars. Their shape is flat and they have white flecking.
It depends upon the type of stock but the scion of white flecking will be higher dencity than own-rooted asterias.
As the result, you can not see the true appearence the asterias.

do you still not recommend trimming ariocarpus tap roots?

It was told you should not cut the tap roots of Ariocarpus because regrowing of roots was hard. But I found it was not true. The regrowing roots of degrafted Ariocarpus is not hard.
I did tap roots cutting test of Ariocarpus seedlings but the result was not so good. The growing speed became slower.

Banjyaku is a hybrid, ornatum x myriostigma.

Hi Hanzono, nice cactus . I have a few astrophytums, not many but they are one of my favorites.

Old Astrophytum asterias during Winter time and no water for this cactus until March , they rot too easy make me wary of watering no matter how flat they get. I do put them under plastic theses days when its raining.

They are 18 years old and some months.

It was a hot day today.
Several Astrophytum asterias cv super kabutos were in flower.
Photos are 3 of them.

Two astrophytum hybrids, fukuryu banjyaku were in flower lately.
Banjyaku is a hybrid, ornatum x myriostigma.

I really liked the last one! It have the same plastelina look as the totem pole cactus (Pachycereus schottii f. monstrosus ). Is the first one an older plant or is this hybrid quite variable?

The hybrid is quite variable.
I got seeds from my friend and sowed. I am not sure the history of seeds but seedlings shows various faces.

1st one is propagated from seed given by my friend.

2nd one is my trial result which was failed.
Fukuryu shows a special pattern on the bottom of ribs.
I tried to give special pattern on rib tops also and crossed fukuryu x myriostigma cv kikko.
24 seedlings were grafted to see early result but no scions showed special pattern on rib tops.

1st one is older than 2nd one.

How are your Echinocactus horizonthalonius doing?

They all are quite well. 2 cacti were in flower lately.
Since I keep them in the greenhouse, spines are very poor unfortunately.
I will move 2 cacti out from the greenhouse and see the changing of spines.

The attached photos are E. horizonthalonius which were in flower lately.
One of them is quite young. It was 1st flowering for the cactus.

A matured Discocactus placentiformis v latispinus f major HU640 was in flower.
I bought seeds and sowed in 2007. Just 3 seedlings have survived and only 1 is the flowering size.
I took the photo early in the morning yesterday.
