Recently, I've got an adenium bug and has been actively researching info for this plant including the local vendors (I don't own one just yet!)

I just came across this blog posting that pretty much states that growing adenium in an apartment is not going to be a very pleasant experience.

Does anyone have a similar experience growing adenium in a typical urban apartment? Or shall I just forget about it? I live in zone 9 with lots of rainy/cloudy days in the winter.

I keep mine outside in the summer, and in the greenhouse in winter. They drop leaves naturally when they go dormant, and when they are in shock from a sudden change in environment. Once they get used to their location and your care, they are super easy to care for ... put them in bright light to full sun water them when thy need it and forget them. (Mine are outside in Florida, they get watered (AKA rained on) a lot!)

One note though, BC Canadian winters are very different from those in Florida I believe, and also I don't own a greenhouse or a backyard. That's why the question - is it realistic to grow Desert Rose in a typical apartment with the balcony vacation time.

I think it would be a problem to grow inside year round, but that depends on what you are willing to do to keep it going.

I live in B.C. also and in the winter I have my cactus and adeniums in my south facing living room window. Here in the Okanagan we get an extremely low amount of sunshine - worse than the coast. One of mine is showing flower buds right now.

I found them at Rona. They had no leaves and they were on clearance sale because they thought they were dying. There is a site on Vancouver island that will mail order them in the god weather.

Here in Colorado My Adenium obesum grows outside on my balcony in the summer June to September. In winter its placed inside by a west facing window under a blue cfl light. No water December through to June. My A. obesum flowers all year round! I also have a Pachypodium namaquanum, P. densiflorum, P. geayi in similar conditions under the same light.
