Re: Contest 79 : Dicussion and related Pictures
Good start of the contest . Those two pictures allready show the range of this month topic. If you go close enought we will get a competley different view of our favourites.
Unfortunately with this lens (40mm), this is about maximum enlargement, but it still makes an interesting view of the tiny Epithelantha flower

Re: Contest 79 : Dicussion and related Pictures
I definitely think that the entries should show us these plants in a way that we normally don't see them when just looking at them on a bench, whether it be flowers or the plant itself. Here was my second choice, Adromischus marinae ssp. herrei. I didn't use it because part of it is slightly out of focus.

Does that count as close up too?

Depends what you mean by how we don't normally see them? Do you mean how most don't normally photograph them close up, as below:-
Parodia (Notocactus) mammulosus.
Rebutia heliosa.
Turbinicarpus polaskii stigma.

I think we shouldn´t draw the line between close up and true Macro Photography too closely. Your great picture of R. heliosa also shows some features of the flower one wouldn´t normally notice with plain sight.

Only counts if he is succulent enough (just joking Maja)

He isn't. He is more like a straw plant, but his brother is much more like succulent.Jens wrote:majcka wrote:Does that count as close up too?

Dave W, I don't make the rules so don't pay too close attention to what I say! I was just giving my opinion that to me "close up" means looking at something in a closer way than standing arms length from the plant would let you do. That could be magnified or macro view, or it could be just simulating what it would look like if you bent down to look at the plant from a foot or two away.
That being said, if you had entered that stigma closeup it probably would have had my vote! That's a beautiful shot.

Re: Contest 79 : Dicussion and related Pictures
Well i enterd finaly after such a long time nothing fancy or anything, im not usualy around durring the winter months and durring the summer mothns is when im come here the most, i dont enter the contest hardly at all due in part my cam is crap and sometimes im lucky and can get my settings just right but most the times i cant, old fart syndrom?
Everyone has great pics.
Dave that shot of the Parodia (Notocactus) mammulosus blooms is just STUNNING!!!
These are just few pics i took was looking at them to use one but nothing really came out that great..
This one would have been real nice if it would have came out alot clearer.
I liked this one but hence the closer i got the more blurry it got, POOOOY!!
This one wasnt to bad.
This one was nice till the clouds rolled in and it got hazey out and my cam lost focus..
Oh well try try again sometime down the road..

Re: Contest 79 : Dicussion and related Pictures
I had fun posting about 6 possible choices to Facebook and asking my (mostly non-cactus) friends to pick one. The zacatecasensis got the most votes. Here were the other candidates. My personal favorite is probably the Sclerocactus parviflorus or maybe the Echinomastus johnsonii.
