Maybe because those are thorns not spines! Since few of us are botanists here I doubt it really matters, I just couldn't resist.

L088 is a form of E. pectinatus with quite red spines.

Any more ? This is allmost over- allthough it will be hard be beat that fierce red hooks of the Ferocactus from Baja California.

I had 2 plants that had good red spines, so I took a bunch a pics of each, both "dry" and"wet"
The Mammillaria spinosissima didn't really change when wet, so I just took the dry photos
But no matter what I tried, my photos of my Echinocereus rubispinus wouldn't work, they all came out terrible, it's too tall!!
and my camera just fails when it comes to the sharpness it needs for this plant They spines really did brighten up when wet This was my back up Mamm shot I thought seeing the whole plant that I posted for the contest was better
