Home Depot (and Lowe's) - at least in AZ - are great places to find some really good surprises if you look long and hard enough through the 'common' species. Many (most) of the really good ones are mislabeled, so throw you off if you aren't familiar with the species in question, but here is just a sampling of some that I've found in the past few years right around my house:
- Agave ghiesbreghtii
- Agave stricta
- Cleistocactus tupizensis
- Echinopsis angelesii (labeled as Cleistocactus tupizensis!)
- Echinopsis lamprochlora (labeled as Trichocereus purpureopilosus)
- Echinopsis tarijensis ssp. totorensis (labeled as Trichocereus poco)
- Matucana madisoniorum
- Micranthocereu auriazureus (labeled as Thrixanthocereus sp!)
- Pilosocereus chrysostele (labeled as Austrocephalocereus estevesei!)
- Parodia herteri
- Pilosocereus gounellei (labeled as Cactus sp.)
- Pilosocereus gounelei ssp. zehntneri (labeled as Pilosocereus baumii)
- Weberbauerocereus johnsonii (sold as Cleistocactus or Cactus sp!)

Not to mention the myriad of Mammillaria species over the years...always a goodie here and there.

The good ones are few and far between, but as the saying goes, you have to kiss a lot of frogs in order to find a prince!

Yes I agree...I have found some nice Rebutia, Trichocereus, and Gymnocalycium mislabeled as well..best to go to the big box stores in the Spring when they get new shipments. I love to frequent the local cacti nurseries here in Central Texas but when I find myself at a big box I can't help but search the garden section for a 'diamond in the ruff'.

I recently made a trip to big bend national park. On the way into town Terligua/Study Butte the is a small cactus store. Many stones is the name. He sells saved (from the site clearing tractors) ariocarpus and other species from M2G and others. He has very affordable prices! 10$ for a 4in diameter ariocarpus fissuratus! I always like to support small local cactus nurseries.

I ordered cacti from cactilimon.com and most had spines that were ripped off that they actually shoved BACK into the cactus to make it look like it wasn't attached, they also had horrible mealy big infestations, i wrote an email to the company telling them and attached picture's of a huge mealy bug walking around the top lid of the cactus container and also a picture of all the hundreds of mealys i removed from the cacti and containers and they NEVER responded back to ME, not even a sorry or a "we'll try to fix the situation" soo rude.. i NEVER ha mealys till i ordered from them and even with keeping them away from my other plant's i find an occasional one here and there...Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Although the nursery stocks more succulents than cacti, their cactus selection is pretty amazing too. Their website is under construction, but keep your eyes peeled, and I wouldn't be surprised if DC will be set up to sell online in the near future. If you can make it to the San Fernando Valley, I highly recommend a visit.

It pays to learn where to buy plants from and what functions to attend such as ELK and Cactus Explorers Weekend in the EU and Cactus Society Plant Shows in all countries in order to get them. I was told somebody bought one of the new Matucana's from Graham Charles at a past Cactus Explorers Weekend in the UK for £3 and then promptly sold it on EBAY for £30. I often pick up such plants from the original discoverers for £2-£5 at such events and wonder what the EBAY dealers would charge. In the past I got Matucana oreodoxa ssp. roseiflora, M. paucicostata ssp. hoxeyi and Borzicactus hoxeyi that way for those sort of prices within a year or two of them being described.

You are always best joining a group of like minded cactophiles in your own country if you want to obtain plants at reasonable prices, or those that are not easily available through the trade.

EBAY is usually not the most cost effective way to buy plants. One of the UK dealers who sold plants on EBAY always used to charge more for them there than if you bought from him direct. Dealers are getting wise to the fact that people who regularly use EBAY as a source of plants will usually pay much higher prices through ignorance than those who know how to search online for specialist cactus nurserymen for what they want.

On EBAY even the commonest plants are usually tagged "rare" to bump the price up from those who are ignorant of their rarity or real value, but as long as it has the rare tag people will pay stupid prices. Therefore always research the plant by doing your homework by searching the web for information or consulting specialist dealers lists to see just how uncommon a plant is before you pay stupid money for them.

I'd love to obtained plants or seeds of B. hoxeyi, for example, but know of no place - UK or otherwise - I can find online that sells any yet.

Boyce Thompson Arboretum has a sale of big variaty of succulents, cacti. I saw lots of blooming mammillaria plants, some Ferocactus and many others yesterday.

I almost went there, drove right by the front gate. Sadly, we were looking for apache tears, and they probably were closed that late in the day.

I've seen a few posts on Reddit about them. Nothing special but the plants seem legit.
