Of Gunnar's expertise...

Post by daiv »

Here is one that I got at the Huntington as a tiny guy about 4 or 5 years ago. It must be a Lobivia of some sort.

There are a few redflowering Lobivias with white-centred flowers. I first thought of L. hertriciana. Found this picture on internet:

Lobivia hertrichiana

Notice also the red stamens. The official name is now of course Echinopsis hertrichiana.

The close standing backebergi should also be
considered

More from googling:

Thanks Gunnar! I knew you'd know this one. Do you have one too? This is the first bloom for me, I was very excited. What do you think of this one?

I think your plant looks very nice, and charming flowers. I am not sure I have exactly this one. I have a seedling of L. hertrichiana simplex which shall have white cetred flowers. I found this picture of simplex on internet:

It does not have the red stamens of your plant, but otherwise it looks the same.

I have another plant with white cetred flowers - the closestanding Lobivia backebergii

Very nice Gunnar. Yours seems to have more compact and uniform flowers too.

Very nice plant Harry. Lobivias are, like most cacti, very variable, so it's hard to say. But yours have more rounded petals then Daiv's plant, and not that stiff spines. Perhaps it looks more like my backebergii in my second reply?
