Opuntia ellisiana

Post by Patriotdevil »

Ok, so the first one that sprouted somehow ended up out of the soil and fell over. The second one got a little bent when it hit the cling film as I hadn't checked them for a few days, i tried to bend it back and unfortunately decapitated it, oops!

So today I go and look and find this Image

The first 2 didn't look like this, is it twins lol?

Just as a matter of interest..how long did these seedlins take to sprout?

I have this also, i think its just two seedlings that are close together.

My first one appeared on the 27th April about 2 weeks after they were sown, the last 2 lots have come up just a few days apart.

Wow thats quite quick for an opuntia! Ive read they take months!

That twin specimen, you should be able to tell if they are both seperate sprouts....do they both have a shell?

I was pretty suprised they came through so quick. All were soaked either in water or in wet paper towels. I cut off a tiny bit off the tips of all the seeds, some of the i cut off bits of the outer layer too.

I can't see a shell, these were sown 1/2-3/4cm under the soil not on top. Both shoots go into that one "blob" at the top, that's not 2 "blobs" very close together.

Excuse my terminology, i'm totally new to growing these

Very odd! Just let it do what it does, it could be a mutant :P

Be sure to post pics of what it turns out like!

Almost, if not all Cacti have cotelydons. Small leaves that appear first after germination. I don't see any there. Opuntia cotelydons are quite large, can't miss them!
I hate to say, but you might be growing mushrooms

Oh :(

I did sterilise the soil before hand, wondered why they shot up so quick. They are weird, the blob on top looks like the seeds did after soaking them.

Guess i'll start again lol

Well I'm thinking that it's wearing it's cap right now Darryl and that it hasn't been able to rid itself of it, which is probably why it's leaning at an odd angle.

Mine are fairly skinny as such, but their cotyledons are up and about!

Whatever these may be, they're now seperate. One still has the "blob" on top.

Two sprouts from one seed? Bonus!

Looks like they need more light though.
