I only went out for a bag of grit

Post by Avirosa »

I just used up the last of my grit so I went out to buy a new bag. None of my local garden centres had any fine grit, but I got these 3 for £5.00 so it wasn't a completely wasted trip!

Looks like a bargain to me. If you want fine grit, try a pet shop that sells tropical fish. They nearly always sell fine grit for aquariums.

Tropical fish! Of course! I will try that. The annoying thing is, my local garden centre has stocked fine grit for years but has changed suppliers and the new one does not stock fine grit. They sell cartloads of candles and pictureframes etc that I don't want in a garden centre but not fine grit! Rant over. I'll get my coat...

Try a local feed store if you can find one. Here in the states they sell various sizes of grit for chicks all the way up to turkey sized grit.Fairly cheap too.

Yep nice new additions and now you have three more to repot. So you need grit even more! I think the stores have an elaborate, well thought out plan to get at your money!

Nice plants :D From the hand written labels, it looks like a good local grower is supplying the garden centre with plants as opposed to them buying them in wholesale from the Netherlands.

A good buy

This time I needed perlite and ended up with this lot too

Here they are repotted:

I fancy they look happier already :)

They are labelled L-R
Pyrrhocactus bulbocalyx
Echinocactus rigidissimus rubispinus
Mamm perezdelarosa (?)

I like the Echinocereus with different colour spine bands from base to apex.

An expensive bag of perlite :!:

Nice plants! I love adding new ones to my collection.

I went to get Perlite the other day too. Only I did not come home with new plants, as I was too sickened by the glued on flowers to see past them. Not only were the flowers glued on, but they were crushed, and they didn't even try for pretty colors!

Heck, if you are going to glue on a flower at least find a good looking one!

Those are all nice plants. Seems you do well when "accidentally" shopping. :D

If you're anywhere remotely near Bristol or S. Wales, then garden centres may have plants from Chris Pugh. The names are usually right and there can be some very interesting things. No glufers! You should still repot and inspect for pests.

Yeah, those are Pugh plants. The handwriting and the general look of the plants in the first post is familiar, and then there's the PUG written on the pots. :P

They're very nice, although the conditions in my local garden centre mean they grow out almost spineless. Poor things.

hehe, impulse purchases.. yeah, I have some experience with those!
I might end up coming home with "a little extra" tomorrow, I have to go out and get some groceries anyway.

I will let you know what I got tomorrow! I'm suspecting a big globe of some sort..
