When do you water your cacti?

Post by iann »

In England, all beginners are trained not to water their plants when the weather is dull and wet because they will rot. Of course in habitat, plants inevitably get watered when it is dull and wet, even if only for a short time.

Trick question!
Some get treated differently than others, but in general i water clay pot plants and garden plants every week, plastic every other week. Our weather here is pretty predictable, so it's easy to keep a regular schedule.

I guess the most direct answer would be, i water when they are dry ;)

Ian,
Ok I picked "When a plant looks wrinkly", but that is because it was the best of my available choices.

I'm with Darryl, but maybe more complicated.

In CA, I watered just about every week on the dot almost all year. This timing seemed to work fine based on how my plants were doing. They were all kept outside year round - no greenhouse. But then again I lived in a city with the slogan: "Best Climate in the World!"

No in MN and with a greenhouse, I water them when they get dry. Which is a couple times a week, but if it is a rainy/cloudy week, I may skip a week, not because they are getting rained on, but because it often cooler. If the temp is still higher, however, I will water.

Do you really water more often in MN? or did ya mean, a couple times a month?

In the summer, I do water more often, yes!

Temps in the greenhouse are consistently pushing 90 or somewhat over. In San Clemente, the max temp was about 80F and that was in combo with nice cool ocean breezes.

I answered "when it's sunny" because my plants grow outside, so if it's raining they get watered anyway, but not by me.

Well, I water when they are dry and only when it is sunny. So I don't know what to choose, I guess when it is sunny.

I water them when it's sunny on a weekly basis. However, when there's some rain, I stop the weekly basis and let them dry up for a week or two.

Well, mine get 90-100% rainfall for water. I only water if it goes dry outside long enough (not often) to require supplemental watering.
