Post by strongoak52 »

i have many species of cacti and one pot of lithops starting to sprout. the oldest is about one month. all started in scotts cactus soil. when and how often should i start to fertilize with schultz 2-7-7 liquid. this is my first time at starting cacti from seed.
will accept any unwanted cacti

No rush. They certainly are fine for a few weeks while they chew on the cotyledons ;) Your soil has a whole lot of fertiliser already in it so its important not to overdo it. You can use very dilute soluble fertiliser each time you water just to make sure the tiny roots have ready access to the right nutrients, but its important not to use too much because the little plants need very very little. Especially in an open pot with evaporation you could rapidly get salt buildup and end up harming the plants.

I don't fertilze seedlings for at least 5 months, or until they start crowding up the pot.
