Re: 2008 Flowering . . .

Post by Cereusly »

For some reason, this year has been one of the best blooming for my plants. The winter was colder than usual, with two weeks dropping into the 20s, and an unusually cool spring. Has anyone else seen a higher flowering of their cacti/succulents this year? I guess they enjoyed the cold, wet winter, and cooler spring.

I have not seen a significant difference in the number of cacti that are flowering. There are many variables that induce a plant to bloom. Cold weather is one of them, but also sufficient rain fall. I found out, that in our area the wild growing Echinocereus spp. did not do as well this year as last year. That was attributed to less rainfall during the winter months. For me things are about average. My plants are subjected to the whims of mother nature, but I do help them a bit with supplemental watering, fertilizing, etc.

I still haven't had any blooms as I just put mine out this last weekend. We'll know in a couple weeks!
