Doubt about stock making monstrose pup
I have echinopsis oxygona cactus to whom pup
I have grafted a opuntia monacantha and i didn't take it out from stock. 4 month later i have seen oxygona pup started to become monstrose 2 of them can be seen in fully monstrose form and 13/20 have started to become monstrose.
So is this because of opuntia monacantha??

Re: Doubt about stock making monstrose pup
Hi Jitesh the echinopsis oxygona is simply putting out multiple pups or offsets.
This is not a monstrose variety.
It is quite common for grafted cactus to create a lot of offsets, a good example of this is gymnocalycium mihanovichii grafted to hylocereus rootstock.
Here is a link to a picture: https://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/135639/#b
You can see that the gymnocalycium mihanovichii has dozens of small offsets (or pups) growing from the main graft.
Hope this clarifies.

Ok, then i think it is same for oxygona and it is not grafted cactus
Re: Doubt about stock making monstrose pup
Imo I'd say those pups are monstrose, I have several mature e. oxygona plants and they never pupped like that, when they pup it's always from the lower areoles on the cactus and the pups don't pup themselves until they reach a greater size

I think (respectfully) that you need to read up a bit about monstrose and crested varieties of cactus in context of their apical meristem.
This link might help: https://www.sublimesucculents.com/crest ... succulent/
To re-iterate, these are not monstrose cacti - they are pups that have grown out of the aerioles of the mother graft.

For Nikon - If pup is grown from every areoles doesn't it mean ,that it is monstrose and same is the case for my oxygona.The_Nikon_Guy wrote: ↑Fri Dec 25, 2020 5:40 amTo re-iterate, these are not monstrose cacti - they are pups that have grown out of the aerioles of the mother graft.
And as Carbo said this is rare for Pup to puping before age and from my perspective this is all done by opuntia monacantha that i grafted to side before that pup have never pupped..
So if anyone can give try grafting O.monacantha to oxygona side pup it will confirm my suspicion about this.
Re: Doubt about stock making monstrose pup
Here's how mine looks, as you can see it pups but not as extreme as Jitesh's plants:
E.oxygona pups like crazy even if not monstrose which is why it's hard to tell, but those pups on pups and ones near the top give it away as a true monstrose plant. I'm interested to see how this plant will look like in a year or two.

And about those 2 monstrose Pup should i let them on mother plant(but they will be getting less energy & slow growth due to so many Pup on cactus around 20 pup on it)
or put in soil (to see how they do on their on root)???

Re: Doubt about stock making monstrose pup
Hi Jitesh: You would be correct. If pups grow from almost every areole, it would indicate that's its a monstrose variety.
Carob: here is an example of a monstrose form of a globular cactus: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Echinocactus-g ... 4613892443
You can see that every aereole has a pup coming out of it. This is a monstrose form IMHO.
Another example of a monstrose superkabuto wherein the pups have pups in turn - this is a more vigourous form of monstrose activity.

Might be a good idea to try rooting one of them, see how that goes.
